Sconce lighting is IDEAL as long as it is at face level. You want the light to reflect evenly on your face if at all possible. So, lights on either side of the mirror, or, mounted directly over the mirror are ideal as long as they are at eye level. Bathroom bar lighting is unflattering and doesn't provide an accurate lighting for your face. Hope that makes sense. I'm not in anyway promoting RH sconces, this is just meant to give you an idea of the ideal type of sconce for the bathroom. I have just remodeled two baths and chose to leave the large mirrors. In the master bath we have two sinks and installed 2 new lights above each. Each of the lights has three lights to it. In the other bathroom, we actually ended up cutting down the height of the mirror since we raised the vanity counters up to kitchen height. We didn't move the light up, just left it at the same height. In fact I took the one we had in there and painted it with a krylon paint that matches my new ceiling light in that room. I liked the light I had and so painting it worked great and save money. In the master, since I used to have only one long light with individual sconces, we had to have new wiring for over each sink. So they just moved the light places up higher thus leaving the mirror the same height. I just looked at my pics of these and realized that you can't see the lights very good due to them being on and a flashback glare. I will take some new ones tomorrow and post each for you to see. I am planning to frame both of these mirrors with wooden trim to make them look like a big framed mirror. I just haven't gotten to it yet.

Thank you so much for these really helpful comments. @kandrewspa, Interesting suggestion about changing the sconces next to the mirrors, and I'll consider it although I do really love the ones I've got. Re the ceiling fixture, I do have one but unfortunately it is primarily an exhaust fan with just a small LED light, which I forgot to turn on when I took my photos. I need that fan, and there isn't room for an additional ceiling fixture. That's why I wanted to put in the lighting over the mirrors, to augment the sconces at the sides. I do already have both categories of lighting on dimmer switches; forgot to mention that. @JustMe, for up-facing sconces to go above the mirrors, do you mean something like this or this from Justice Design, or this one from Capital Lighting, or this one from Swiss Passport? Would you place them above each mirror, or between them?
