The first question is the issue of joint ownership of the bed between the driveways. How have you and the neighbor shared it up to now? Does the neighbor share your husband's concerns? If you and the neighbor are likely to cooperate on how to proceed, this is what I'd do. First, prioritize the trees and plants. What do you want? What can you give away? What isn't worth keeping? What can you move to another part of the property? (It seems to me that you have too many trees, and must get rid of several of them. Plan now for their mature size. Consider their water needs as well.) If your ultimate aim is to make the strip less of a hodgepodge, that doesn't mean all the plants have to be the same variety. You can tie different plants together with a common theme. The theme you choose might be large trees with selected ground covers of the same height. Or trees surrounded by plants with the same one or two blossom colors in common. Or a mixture of trees and shrubs surrounded by a single ground cover. Or a row of trees, each encircled by a different ground cover of similar height. I'd make the design bi-laterally symmetrical: the same on each side of the driveway. Aim for an elegant simplicity. Please reconsider the Empress Tree (Paulownia tomentosa). Susan, I grow the coral porterweed in my garden, and I've grown the blue, red and purple in the past. All but the red attracted butterflies in a huge way. The red one never grew much, so maybe its small size and few blooms made it less attractive than the others. I also grow turk's cap, and butterflies and hummingbirds both love it, especially the sulphurs, gulf frits, and palamedes swallowtails - they're a real magnet for cloudless sulphurs and hummers. I grew abutilon in a container once, because I'd read it was a big nectar plant for butterflies or hummers, but never saw a single butterfly visiting it, a real bust. If I were you, I'd nix that one! I've had giant cigar plant in my garden for several years now. When it's in bloom, hummers and butterflies visit it occasionally, but it only blooms in a big way once a year, in late summer/early fall. It made a few blooms in spring last year, so maybe it's like buttonbush - with age, it blooms more often. Mine has to return from the roots every spring, which it's already doing now, and regrow every year, so maybe in a container, it'd bloom earlier and more often, I don't know. Sherry

You should be able to find them at most nurseries. The big box stores typically carry a selection of Australian plants (Grevillea Noelli, Grevillea Red Hooks, Callistemon "Little John," Callistemon citrinus, Eremophila... etc) If you want a wider and more specific selection, you'll have to find a specialty nursery, which I'm sure there are plenty of in the area. I live in Northern California and we have a large selection of Hakeas, Grevilleas, Corymbia, Eucalyptus, Doryanthes and many, many more at select nurseries. Southern California will have even more availability I'm sure. I know Australian Native Nursery in Ventura specializes in Australian plants but it is too far away for you unless you'll have an entire day to spare. Good luck! Welcome to the Golden State!

I sometimes propagate a few E. regnans and may have some next spring or summer. The tree pictured froze dead in December 2009 after reaching almost 70' tall so I can't really recommend it for most normal Northwest gardeners who don't like giant dead trees. I might have a couple pots of variegated Algerian ivy kicking around; I'll have to check. This plant and Podocarpus salignus did not sustain any damage last winter, so that is nice.
