Weed Identification and Lawn Revival for a newbie - Richmond, VA
Comments (4)Well, after some more research, I've made some progress on identifying the weeds, and figured I'd share... I'm almost positive #1 is Virginia Buttonweed I think #2 might be nutsedge. Can someone confirm that? As far as #3 goes, I think it is bermuda grass. But I think I actually have some bermuda and crabgrass, particularly where the lawn meets the street. And now begins the long process of trying to revive my lawn. My current plan is... 1. Try to control the weeds as best I can for now by spraying them with weed control for lawns and/or picking them by hand. Already started and it seems to be slowly killing the weeds and leaving the grass intact. 2. Come early-September, I'm going to fill in some depressed areas of the lawn with topsoil 3. Top dress the rest of the lawn with a thin layer of top soil. 4. Add some milorganite (unless someone has a better suggestion) 5. Seed entire yard with tall fescue, or maybe a mix of tall fescue and kentucky bluegrass 6. Water daily until grass starts to grow, then only twice a week for a few weeks, then only once a week. 7. Pray that tons of grass grows and chokes out the weeds 8. Come early spring, spread pre-emergent herbicide on the lawn Thoughts? Comments (8)Temps were in the low-mid 70s during day and low 50s at night when applied, only applied it in test areas, followed directions that stated to water down lawn before applying, lightly applied only in test areas (e.g., 2' x 2'), did not water for a couple of days after that (if I recall correctly it stated don't water after that so the granules stay stuck to the weeds). Believe me, I followed the directions. The only clue I had on the packaging about what may have happened is the fescue isn't established enough, although at least some of it should be considering it was planted from seed and thriving the summer of 2006, just some overseeding to fill in spring 2007. I think the packaging says don't apply until you've mowed new grass at least a few times but my lawn had been mowed many times more than that....See MoreHow to kill grass and weeds in moss lawn
Comments (14)Also for weeds in areas like walks and gravel paths...1 gallon of white vinegar 2 cups Epsom salts 1/4 cup of dawn blue liquid soap. mix well in a canister sprayer spray early morning weeds deed by night. also on large areas like driveways buy a torch from home depot or the place I linked below along with a propane tank like you use on your outdoor grille and just burn them away. Roundup is just a terrible terrible product!!! Highly toxic kills wildlife causes illness such as cancer to humans, pets and woodland creatures. Get into into the water table. https://jet.com/product/65a277740865404bb94361416de71a4a?jcmp=pla--ggl--home_garden_other--lighting_tiki_torches_oil_lamps_other--.--.--.--.--.--2&code=PLA15&k_clickid=ac203f78-ba5d-43af-9925-0231c8a37b3b&kpid=65a277740865404bb94361416de71a4a&gclid=CPf_3eWqqccCFckYHwodVfwLIQ...See MoreHow to kill weeds in lawn
Comments (15)Sharbear, Your elevation and the slope of your yard may also have something to do with it. If you're in a low spot for your neighborhood then you'll need less water than your neighbors because all of their excess is draining towards you. And even just a few centimeters can make a difference in spots. I have two plumbago bushes just ten feet from each other in identical light and soil conditions but the slight slope of the yard means that one gets too much run-off and will never ever be happy. (Guess I should rip it out, but the list of shoulds is long in my yard.) Another thing you should consider is a septic tank. Do you have one? Did the house have one at some point? If you only have dollar weeds in a certain area, it might be a septic tank that is causing that area of the yard to drain differently from the rest of the yard....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
