Anyone near South Padre Island, Texas?
Comments (55)Annie, was thinking of someway for you to fill in a few days with something that might be of interest. If you travel a bit north from Harlingen you'll bump into San Antonio. SA is about a 3 1/2 hour drive north of Harlingen - pretty wide open driving and nothing to slow you down. The King Ranch owns most of the land along this route. About 1/2 way between Harlingen and SA is one of the best BBQ places in Texas. There are several Motel 6's in the SA area. You might find bargains on the Riverwalk this time of the year (off season) and maybe you'd be nearer many of the major attractions/history. There are many things of interest that would keep you moving and out of the motel several hours a day. There is a hop on - hop off trolley that's convenient and easy to use. Might be less expensive to stay downtown than parking and lot fees on a daily basis etc. Austin is about a 1 1/2 hour drive from San Antonio. If it appealed to you both and was an easy fix, you might choose to drive to SA, spend a couple of days then drive into Austin for a couple of days before picking up your return flight. A few sites below for you to check out for interest. http://www.segcity.com/ http://www.lsjunction.com/facts/missions.htm http://www.sanantonioriverwalk.com/photo.html http://www.sanantonioriverwalk.com/tourism.html http://www.buysanantoniotours.com/index.html I didn't include the museums, zoo etc. Included only what is unique to this area. The next address is of a very pretty cavern between SA and Austin - not a Carlsbad, but very pretty in it's own right. You could pick it up on your trip from SA to Austin for the return flight. http://www.buysanantoniotours.com/tours/sa-natural-bridge-caverns-north-cavern-tour.html I hope this gives you another option for those precious vacation days. Comments (0)At least some of the Lowes, Walmart and HEB have received roses (from MEA, Certified and Certified respectively) in the Austin, TX market this week. FWIW, I know several years ago, Walmart used to carry the Mea body-bags, and the ones I purchased had RMV pretty severely. (I don't know if they have cleaned that up -- they are selling a higher-grade product at Lowes.) I have heard similar allegations about Certified, but have not seen signs of such on my own roses. (It has to be said that such does not always show in our climate.)...See MoreBare root roses are in Central Texas now
Comments (5)Grab that Shirley's Bouquet! It is a beautiful clear white, lasts a long time on the bush. I had Moonlight Magic a long time ago but dont think it did much - but cant remember. Where did you see Shirley? I want another one. I got several body bags of Cl. Royal America - I read really good reports about it on HMF and went back to get 3 more. They are potted and starting to leaf out. Definitely get Shirley!...See MoreCertified Roses getting into the direct sales market...
Comments (17)We have a wonderful rose selling nursery here in Boise. Last year's prices were about $30 for a non Austin five gallon plant, and about $5 more for an Austin. That's five gallon plant folks, and already starting to bloom when I pick it up in May from the special greenhouse where it has been waiting for me, since purchase earlier. I'm sure the prices will be somewhat higher this year. I will know in January when this nursery's rose list comes on line. Diane...See MoreBenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14)
