seed sales at market
Comments (8)I really can't imagine anyone being happy about getting 10 lettuce seeds in a packet, even for $1. I think many home gardeners direct seed most greens, including lettuce, and expect at least a 1/2 teaspoons worth. Besides, most small seeds are produced on plants in large enough quantity that its still very profitable to sell this much as long as you get a retail price. Example: This past season I let 10 ft of arugula go and now have to figure out what to do with a quart of seed! I agree that for larger seeds (beans, pea, squash) 20 or so is usually enough....See MoreHow did you get into market gardening?
Comments (16)First of all, that was a few years ago. I'm afraid to figure the hourly rate NOW. I figure every hour that was involved from deciding on what to plant, where to plant, prepare the soil, all the weeding, picking, sorting. Everything that happens BEFORE you can sell anything. Plus we were working 20 hours per week per person either selling at market or preparing or disposing before and after market. I love what I do, so even $2/hr is more than nothing per hour. Most hobbies actually costs you money, so if you enjoy what you are doing plus make even a small profit is good. I researched the market that I currently sell at for entire year before I started to sell at the market. Now after 11 years, I have customers that will ONLY buy from me or someone that I recommend. That took time to arrive at that place. Newcomers to the market have to establish themselves. How I started was the plant extra of what I would eat or preserve, in case they didn't sell. I was lucky enough to sell everything that I grew. I didn't charge near enough for my produce, but I did get a reputation for having very high quality produce that has followed me throughout the years. If you enjoy gardening on a large scale and you can afford the seeds and startup costs, go ahead and try it. Worse thing is you will learn that it's not for you, or you will have so much food preserved for yourself that you might not need to buy much at the grocery store....See MoreMini roses from local market survived winter and blooming

Comments (24)Run away from Wal-mart. Last time I succumbed to the Mea nursery trash there, I had never seen such egregious RMV on plants. I have not seen evidence of the RMV on roses from Certified, but that certainly doesn't mean they are necessarily clean. In our climate, RMV isn't always that evident. They do all appear to be grafted, and I would regardless assume a pretty high possibility. Cori Ann, not to make you too jealous, but it has happened. I picked up a bare root Camara for 9.98 a week or two ago. Nice looking plant. (You guys have rudely plant-friendly weather, so don't be too jealous.)...See Moresultry_jasmine_nights (Florida)
