exterior update to craftsman bungalow
Comments (16)The steps off the porch are where? on the left high side? Do consider putting a railing but only across the front. You could then add eye hooks evenly spaced above the railing and hang several hanging baskets for flowers (or strawberries) above the rail and pick up a few over-the-railing brackets and rectangle pots as well. Would not clutter the front yard with a lot of plantings but a hedge that looks good year round (such as Aucuba bushes or Cammilia bushes or Gardinia bushes)in front of the porch (kept trimmed at rail level) would be a good finishing touch. Outline that planting area with a solid row of pavers with their tops level with the ground level will make mowing up to the planting area easier. You could also create a tiny front yard patio to the right of the porch with a small round table, a couple of comfortable chairs and a few groupings of potted flowering plants or even your favorite vegetables/spices. A bird bath visible from the patio seating could provide entertainment....See Morea 1900 bungalow that desperately needs updating
Comments (23)What a fun project! A long term one, for sure.... I think the exterior looks great for now. Don’t put your money there until it needs it. I would hire an architect who has experience with old homes in your town to walk through the house and give you ideas about how to make the space work for you. The spaces don’t make sense from the photos from the listing. There will be structural issues for any change that is made to the room configuration, I suspect. The kitchen looks to be in pretty great shape, but the bathrooms...not so much. Again, a fabulous project. But take a deep breath and let it out slowly. This will be a wonderful adventure....See MoreExterior design ideas for rancher
Comments (3)I would get rid of the shutters which are too small for that type of window. Perhaps pick a brighter color for the front door since it is practically invisible in the photo (unless that is just the photo and in real life it is easy to see). I also am not a fan of the stark white, but that is just an opinion. As far as landscaping, I would add a couple of small flowering trees, some planting in front of the house, but not right up against it-build a wide bed in front and plant a mix of shrubs and perennials. Landscaping will make all the difference in the world. For useful suggestions though, we need to know where you are located (as Ken says, nearest big city). I also agree that it would look better with wide steps facing front-then you could curve the walkway out with graden on both sides. I love ranches. Have one myself with a heavily planted yard....See MoreUpdating 70s Raised Rancher
Comments (8)I like your pergola over the garage! I'm in the middle of updating my dad's 70's split level, and I'm curious to see what you end up doing. My brick is not a great color, so I'm painting it in shades of green (some people don't like painted brick, I love it & think a limewash would really update your exterior). Forgive the crude mock-up, I "limewashed" your upper brick and did a little contrast darker green on the garage doors/front concrete structure. I also added a bit of horizontal wood siding for interest, and removed the shutters for a more contemporary look ;) Good luck and look forward to seeing your finished update!...See MoreFirst Time Build
