Queen or Monarch Chrysalis?
I found this chrysalis attached to a freeze killed banana leaf last week while cleaning up the garden. I have a few questions:
1) Is it a Queen or Monarch chrysalis? I have both butterflies though many more Monarchs than Queens. Unless I have one chrysalis of each side-by-side where I can see the size difference, I can't tell.
2) Did the freeze kill the butterfly inside? It doesn't appear to be getting any bigger.
3) How long does it normally take to go from chrysalis to butterfly?

Comments (3)I could be wrong. I'm fairly new to identifying butterflies. I googled "white chrysalis gold butterfly" and found a picture that looked like my chrysalis. Comments (4)I don't know about that but I picked up 6 wild cats and fed them in a plastic pretzel jug. one died, the rest went into chrysalis. 2 have emerged. one fell apart, one is very dark but looks like it may have died. The last one is looking real good so far. The only problem is that the ones that emaerged decided to do so while we were sleeping and my 4 year old missed it. Am hoping she can watch the next one emerge. She loves helping to care for and releasing her 'babies' . I wish I could put a picture of the enclosure I made. I got two 12-18 inch rings and two smaller rings. Using white netting (soft) from the fabric store I stitched around the big rings with them about 3 feet apart. I overlapped one hte side to keep them from escaping. I stitched the smaller rings 6 inches above the top ring and below the obottome ring. Gathered the ends and tied them and have it hanging in my office. When the butterflies emerged they woudl not go to the sugarwater so I picked a few flowers outside and stuck them in a jar. AND the chrysalis, too! duh. don't know why i would even think that the chrysalis of the monarch would look the same as the queen (even if I thought the queen was a 'queen monarch'!! thank you Marcia...I have soooo much to learn) ..i knew the cats were a bit different, but duh! Never thought past the cat to the chrysalis... I'll watch the little brown...um...spots....we'll see what develops. Comments (24)I also had a cat that began to form it’s chrysalis on a leaf, then fell a short distance and “bled” a bit of its green fluid. I rehung it after it appeared that the chrysalis was sealing back as it hardened. It survived and successfully became a butterfly I released. I also had two other harder falls during the 2021 season that did not survive so I quickly euthanized them. I think the first post asking about the diagonal lines differs from the damaged chrysalis pictures. I had one do that and it’s the butterfly’s antenna forming. The chrysalis is clear. You can begin to see the parts of the little beasties as it gets closer to the time they are to eclose. Start your milkweed seeds SOON, place seeds in the north on soil once cold is there for good (cold, not freeze). Step on them gently to make contact with soil. Nature will cold stratify for you and milkweed will emerge in its season! Throw some in woodlands or ditches near you!...See More

5 years agoAs Rhonda mentioned above, unless they're side by side, I wouldn't be able to tell:
(3 Monarchs, left; 2 Queens, right) ^^ These are from my most recent brood.
Because I've had Monarch chrysalises on the smallish side (where I didn't think a butterfly could emerge, but did), I don't know that a 1" chrysalis = Queen.
I guess we'll know in a week or two. Please share once your critter emerges.

5 years agoJean: I can't measure the Monarchs as they all JUST eclosed pre-dawn -- 8 new butterflies are drying their wings as I type. :)
The Queen chrysalises pictured above are in the same enclosure, so I don't want to disturb the newly emerged Monarchs. However, the length/size of my final Queen chrysalis (formed yesterday) is typical of the others, IIRC; and it's measuring just shy of 3/4" (excluding the cremaster):
