I brought two chrysalis' inside as they were in a bad location, one normal green and one white. I had never seen a white chrysalis survive before, but thought I'd give it a try. On July 12th the green chrysalis hatched and I took the monarch outside and placed it on a milkweed plant where it dried it's wings and took off. I was thinking the white chrysalis simply didn't survive but decided to give it a couple of days. On the morning of July 14th a healthy monarch hatched out of the white chrysalis and I took it outside, where he flew away just a few minutes ago.

Great pictures. I think I've seen more Queens this past week just before we had a cold spell than I did all summer and fall. I'll have to make some pictures small enough to post because I have a lot of interesting ones lately. Those sheep are neat to see. That's not something I get to see very often and I love them. Sounds like you had a fun trip.

I am especially glad he or she will not eclose in the middle of winter. tdogmom - I actually thought of you and your toilet when I realized I might be missing one. (it was you with the toilet pupae, right? And the carpet?) Another one made his chrysalis today, and 3 more are almost ready. The last one to hang was a real pistol...he kept trying to get out of the hamper - he made it once but I caught him. I kept putting sticks in his path, but he didn't seem to like them. I had to go to bed, so I finally got him onto a stick and put it in a jar with saran wrap in top. He had no choice but to attach to that stick ;) More babies are on the way -- 5 or 6 hatched yesterday, and about a dozen more should by tomorrow. I finally had to stop bringing the eggs in off of my parsley - I don't know if I'll have enough to feed the upcoming herd! I plan to get some more parsley from the nursery. Of course, last time I did that I inspected them and picked the ones with eggs and baby cats. It's a sickness! Oh, and a very cute thing....the hatchlings are so tiny, and they really don't move too much. I thought one was dead so I nudged it to check. He stuck his little teeny osmeterium out at me! hehe.

just when i think i might know a little something...find out that there is WHOLE lot more out there to learn. such subtle differences and yet worlds apart, these butterflies. AND the chrysalis, too! duh. don't know why i would even think that the chrysalis of the monarch would look the same as the queen (even if I thought the queen was a 'queen monarch'!! thank you Marcia...I have soooo much to learn) ..i knew the cats were a bit different, but duh! Never thought past the cat to the chrysalis... I'll watch the little brown...um...spots....we'll see what develops. I had one in the house...it unfolded this morning and has flown!! ..what a grand way to start the day...coffee on the patio with an unfolding butterfly! *pics to follow, I hope*
