I’m lucky in this house to have well-maintained toilets so I have no problem keeping them clean on a weekly basis. Turn off the water, dump in some cleaner, let it sit for a few minutes, swish with a brush, flush and finished. I use Lysol wipes for the seat and surrounding surfaces...the one time when I ignore economics and the ecology and use a disposable product.

I remember, though, living in apartments with toilets that had damaged finishes in the bowls. My only recourse was to clean them twice a week to keep any build-up from occurring because once the hard water deposits were there, you had to really scrub to get rid of them.

Wondering if they still make those tablets that you can drop in the bowl and they fizz similar to denture cleaner. I have looked several places and cannot find them.

Fun why turn off the water if you just wait a couple of minutes then swish and flush? Having children or another person that does not pay any attention are the only things that come to mind.

Plain ol' comet to scrub the bowl.

I have a 2 gallon bucket that I fill up a little more than half way w/water, then pour it quickly into the toilet bowl. If you do it right, the force of the water will push all the water that's in the bowl (as well as the water from the bucket) on down. (And you don't have to turn off the water.)

Then I sprinkle in the Comet and scrub w/a toilet bowl brush.

I spray 409 on the rim & seat and wipe off w/a paper towel.

I used to by the liquid bowl cleaner stuff. But when I discovered my cleaning person was using comet, I quit wasting the money on it!

And if you get the hard water deposit at the water line, empty the bowl as pudgeder says. Then take a pumice stone to it. Works like a charm!

If you are looking for a fizzy tablet like the denture cleaners then use denture cleaners in the bowl. You can buy them at the dollar store and they work great on cleaning your toilet. It is porcelain after all.

raven I know about the denture cleaners. Years ago what ever company that advertises as "Scrubby Bubbles' used to make a tablet to drop in the bowl. You lowered the lid, waited, then swished. They did an excellent job of cleaning. I was asking if those were still made. After I posted I looked an found that they no longer make them. If anyone knows of another company that makes something similar I would like to know the brand. As far as things that you put in the bowl or tank for supposed long term cleaning I have a cat that when I stand up he wants to play in the water so the long term things are out.

Comet, Scrub Daddy and a glove. The outside is cleaned with CLR Kitchen & Bath using a microfiber towel.

Toilets get cleaned weekly or as needed. As needed usually occurs after my two grandsons visit.

Newer toilet porcelain is much easier to clean and virtually scratch proof. It's very smooth and slick and repels mineral/hard water deposits. Mine do not have the water inlets around the bowl which makes cleaning much easier. VorMax.

Pumice stone scratches badly. I would not use it on any porcelain that still had a shiny finish. Lysol makes a very strong toilet bowl cleaner ( in the black bottle) that removes hard water stains, mineral deposits ..anything you can think of. It is powerful stuff! Run the exhaust fan, open the window, whatever you need to do to vent the fumes out. But that bowl will be spotless. I don't think it would be necessary for weekly cleaning.

Had never heard of Ring King until I went vacuum cleaner shopping. The owner sells it along with a few other cleaning products. It works like magic!

I use Comet in the bowl too. I have one toilet that is not often used that has mineral build-up around the bowl. I keep thinking I need to use pumice on it.

The pumice stone may cause more harm than good. It will take some scrubbing to remove the built up deposits, reducing the outer protection and the vicious cycle continues.

I am afraid to use anything that might damage/scratch the finish. My problem is that ring that forms when the toilet hasn't been used for a week or so when I am away.

As some of you know I collect laundry detergent. ..I don't open vintage or discontinued detergents but if I'm testing a current day brand that for whatever reason I don't use for laundry I use it in the toilet bowl than scrub with the brush. Exterior gets wiped down with either a solution of chlorine bleach and water or dispisable antibacterial wipes. My toilets (2) get cleaned daily. Its an OCD thing.

mamap, if i'm correct you have 3 males residing there and other males that visit frequently, so no, daily cleaning isn't obsessive. I notice a huge difference when I have company over for any length of time.

Ali, yeppers. And all these males must sit when they drain their lizard in my house but I suspect my adult sons ignore my request. LOL.

Brushworks, you mentioned VorMax. I'm not too concerned about flushing power, but I hate the discoloration that always seems to start at each little pin-hole under the rim. Does vor-max really do away with that, or do you just have one larger area that discolors, instead of little bitty areas mostly hidden under the rim?

Are some of the products that have been mentioned compatible with systems connected to a septic tank and weeping bed?

It seems to me that some may cause trouble with the digestive operation there. Not sure which ones that may be.

Mineral deposits and the mineral ring that forms can easily by removed with either The Workstoiket bowl cleaner or the black Lysol toilet bowl cleaner and a brush.
