Well...a common approach is to make the gutters and downspouts match the materials where they are located so that the gutters and downspouts do not contrast and become highly visible elements.

What is your siding material and finish...hope it's not simply building paper...! :-)

No Virgil, we aren't planning on leaving building paper on our brand new home.

My question is if there is a different approach when your fascia is cedar instead of painted wood. The gutters will also run down the cedar covered porch on the front on the home.

The house is primed Hardie. We have not yet chosen paint color or trim color. We are currently in progress.

In the photo, above, it appears for that portion of the roof that there may be a gutter of only a few feet long. In any sort of medium to hard rain, all of the water (and snow, if you have any) collected by the two large, sharply pitched roofs is simply going to sheet over the top of the small gutter and splash on the ground below the gutter. If the rest of your house is similar to this photo, I might consider eliminating the gutter and downspout entirely, and preparing the ground next to the house to carry away both rain and surface runoff...because that's where the water is going to be.

i'd say normally they are matched to the roof color or the trim color. if you're leaving all the trim in the cedar, than match it to that. here's one in a copper tone that looks great w/the metal / wood

a lot will depend on the gutter locations, and the colors for the house. If you match it to the roof, it will blend in. match it w/the copper, it will also blend w/the cedar (this looks great w/black trim elsewhere btw)

Thank you Beth H. Those pictures give a nice visual. I'm unsure of specific gutter locations other than in the front of the house (which I don't have a finished photo of) we have a covered porch and the gutters will come off of the cedar posts. So most of the gutters will back up against stained cedar. Copper isn't an option for us but it looks beautiful! Looking at these I'm thinking that matching it to the roof makes the most sense. In the middle photo the gutters seem slightly lighter than the roof but it blends subtlely with the cedar post porch. Just what i was wondering. Thanks! Do people usually match their trim to their roof?

Copper is avail for the aluminum gutters.,,they do the color, not pure copper. Any of the better gutter extrusions they do on site, can do the copper color, you can have it bright copper, aged copper, even copper w/the patina. I know because I wanted it for my own house and got it.

I would also lean towards the faux copper. It should not be (much) pricier than any other color. I personally would not pick my siding color based on the available gutter colors.

Depending on your house color, a good dark brown may blend in well also.

We are not picking the siding based on the gutters. I was curious about trim and gutters matching. We just haven't decided yet on house/trim colors. Mostly because our hardie board is pre-primed and we live in the NW and need to wait for the dry season to paint. At the moment I'm just focusing on how to go about picking gutter colors. We will not be doing copper as neither of us really like that look for our area. We are in a NW forest setting. The question is does it make more sense to match our gutters to our trim or our roof? Seems like it's subjective.

hello!!!! pick out your window colour, i would suggest a soft charcoal then your siding colour and stone if its going up..then your sofits which could be a close match to contrasting window frames...so dark siding, rich colour of window and a medium frame colour...sofits match medium to light window frame...voila!!! awsome

to me your steel roof reads a medium colour,,so soffits should be in mid range

Karen, our soffits are already done in stained cedar as is the fascia. Our windows are white vinyl. Would you still go with a dark siding and medium to light frame? That sounds lovely to me! What color does that leave the gutters?

Paint your gutters to match the cedar.

i would go with deep rich charcoal siding which looks beautiful

BM FLINT AF-560 siding....NOVEMBER RAIN OC-50 gutters..and a nice crisp white CHANTILLY LACE OR OXFORD WHITE shutter...then you can knock your front door out of the park...The deep charcoal will really make your cedar soffits look rich..maybe find somewhere else to add more cedar to tie soffit in...

Curious why you've picked the fascia color, but not the gutters, downspouts and the siding? Or the windows frames and other trim materials. Usually one picks them all together as a comprehensive design decision, not just one thing at a time. That's the hardest way to select finishes.

Or have you picked all these and simply haven't told us?

Yay! Thank you Karen. Great tips and much appreciated. We also have a beautiful knotty alder door and will a large dormer which will be cedar shingles.

Well Virgil, I'll answer that question easily. The metal roof color we wanted ended up not being available. So everything changed at the last minute. We knew we wanted cedar soffits and fascia no matter what but our roof went from a charcoal to a khaki color. So I'm asking for help. If you have any input on what i should match my gutter colors to please feel free to chime in. Otherwise the backstory is just that at this point. Onward we go!

We used gutters that matched the fascia boards which in turn were painted to match our window trim (Anderson 400 Terratone...Sherwin Williams actually has that color in their database).

When a poster asks about interior or exterior finishes it's always a help to know and understand all of the other finish choices, since they all have to be harmonious with each other. We still don't know what your exterior wall material and finish will be, and that will have a major effect on the color of gutters and downspouts.

If your exterior siding and finish will be some sort of "natural" color, then I think the suggestion above to paint both gutters and downspouts a copper color is a good solution.

Ron's suggestion of one color for the gutter, matching the natural stain finish, and a second color for the downspouts, matching the siding finish, is also a good possibility.
