Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

New Door, Need Help With Exterior Trim Color

We just installed a new door as part of our kitchen renovation, and we're at a bit of an impasse regarding what color to paint the trim. The existing trim on the rest of the house is dark green, which we don't care for, and would like to paint off-white at some point. We will probably have the entire house painted, but not for around 4 years due to budget constraints. Do we paint the door trim the same color as the trim that we hate on the rest of the house, live with it for 4 years, then repaint it in the color we actually want? Paint the trim the color we want now and live with the mismatch? DIY paint all the trim on the house until we can afford to do the entire exterior?

Advice appreciated--I'm attaching a photo of the door in question.

I would paint it to match what is there now. 4 years is a long time to live with mismatch

Are you able to leave your siding color and repaint all of your trim now? Or are you saying you can only paint the door trim now?

The mix of painted and stained gives this house some of it's charm. I know gray is currently very trendy, but it has no place next to the warm tones of the cedar shakes. A green or burgundy would be a classic choice in this situation. You could do a green with a bit more gray in it as a nod to more contemporary tastes, but it needs to look good with the cedar. Behr Grape Leaves was one of the first colors that came to mind. It's a warm yellow based green to go with the warm shingle color, but has enough gray in it to read "now". But now that I view it onscreen with the shingles, I think it might be too light to provide contrast and you might want to move to Jungle Trail instead.

I think a light grey would look very smart - white trim. Be sure to paint the garage door the same color as the house to help it disappear.

I love that door! That deep red brick is very powerful, saturated color, and it needs Trim and accents that can stand up to it without battling. British racing green, a deep blackish green or greenish black, or charcoal, ith a little bit of thin white lines (more experienced people will have advice as to exactly how to place this), would be beautiful. I would use something just a tad lighter for that floor. Given the fact that people are going to be walking on it and leaving scuffs and shoe prints, I'm afraid the darker colors would always look messy.

I think a grayed olive green for the trim, and a deeper shade of the same green on the door would look great. I would look for light fixtures that coordinate with the door hardware. Try SW Oakmoss for the door color, and one of the lighter shades for the trim.

Denita, we're putting up new trim around the door so that will be painted regardless. Taking on painting all the trim on the house is a bit daunting, since we're still finishing this kitchen renovation and I'm 6.5 months pregnant! I'm just loathe to put on more paint that we don't like the color of, but it sounds like that may be our best option for now.

Congratulations! I totally understand and you have a lot on your plate right now. I agree with your conclusion. I bet you are looking forward to your new kitchen and the baby :) Cherish these times. 4 years will fly by before you know it.
