climber as a shrub ?

I ordered Quicksilver & Florentina ,kordes climbers because I wanted to try them so bad after every one's beautiful pics . I want to plant them at my backyard hedge near boxwood shrubs , but don't know whether a trellis will look odd there or not . I was thinking of growing them as big shrubs so they look more natural at the hedge . Any one tried this ? how about pegging them to the ground ?

You can keep a climber as a large 5 or 6 foot shrub. But it requires that you prune hard in the spring, summer and fall. I have kept a rambler down to 7 feet but I had to carry my clippers with me all the time. When you see a cane headed up to the sky, you clip it down to match the other's height. I should warn you that Kordes roses get very mad if you cut them back hard. They tend to get even with you by throwing up VERY long canes just to say, how do you like that! It works much better if the climber is a floribunda. Older climbers are not able to stay as a shrub because of their extreme growth. I think that pegging will only encourage tall growth. which will them flop over.

Pink Rose,

Quick Silver is listed as 7'. Florentine is listed up to almost 10'. I think your chances are best with Quick Silver, especially with how large roses get in Florida. I'm attempting the same thing with QS, grow it as a shrub. I hope we have success.

Sammy, I can't even imagine the monster created by putting 3 Westerlands together!!! And the thorns! One year, after pruning, I was trying to tie up one of those rigid thorny canes on the trellis attached to the fence. It slipped out of the tie and whipped around, scraping my face. Actually, it happened twice. I was afraid to look in the mirror... I expected to look like I'd been mauled by the claws of a bear. I had a few scratches above my eye and a really big bruise on my brow ---- from a rose! :) Thank you all for your input. I've made my decision: I will keep it as a climber for another year but thin it out and remove the forward-growing canes so I can more easily reach the top-most canes when they need pruning. I'll give it all the coddling it wants this year, and see how it does. It needs more attention than I gave it last year, so I should give it a chance. Those blooms... that color, the scent! It's worth keeping for at least another year. :)

As long as you don't provide it support so it has to thicken its canes to support itself and you prune the dickens out of it, usually, yes, you can train many climbers to be self standing. Fourth of July is stiff enough I would imagine you should be able to do what you want. It's going to probably have to be a large shrub if you want any flowers as this rose wants to be BIG. Kim

I still have this peculiar rose...but only because I have been too idle to remove it. It mooches about, still just with one long cane and a couple of spindly offshoots and occasionally throws out a really rather good bloom (with a weak neck), most surprisingly around November. I can see why it is seductive but after 4 years, to get only a tiny handful of roses in a season is just hopeless. I freely admit to being rubbish+ with food and water, but enough roses seem to manage perfectly well. I have to conclude that this is one of those fussy types.

Thanks for all the info, everyone! Though I have to admit, I was poking around and found Cori Ann's old post about Souvenir du Dr Jamain, and now I am seriously considering that one instead of Tess. The tales of blackspot have always scared me off. But that color! This rose will go next to Eden, and I can just picture those wine-red blooms making a dramatic statement next to the soft pink/green of Eden. Anyone care to make a decision for me? Do I go with reliable Tess, or wildcard but stunning SdDJ?

I think l will put both in the ground without any support and see how they grow .
