The current headboard is lovely and the fact that is has sentimental value makes it something you want to hang onto. But I don't think it will fit with a Scandinavian style. But, do you think you could repurpose the headboard into the backing for a bench? Imagine building a seat and that becomes the back of it. Like this: tall back bench. I think it would be a simple project for anyone who is slightly handy with woodworking. That could become a lovely piece for elsewhere in your home, and then you can put the focus on the new look for the bedroom.

I think the mirrors/window frames and the side tables are going to have to go as well to achieve a more modern look. Also the chest at the end of the bed, unless you can paint it to match your new choices and it will work with a new headboard etc.

I usually start by finding the bedding I want, and let that dictate some other choices. In your case maybe you want to start with a new headboard and that becomes your starting point for fabric choices, bedding, curtains etc. The current carpet seems to be quite neutral and should go with almost anything you choose.

Then choose a paint colour from your fabrics, or a contrasting or coordinating colour. The ceiling fan should be replaced. If you feel you need a fan, look around for a less traditional design. Otherwise, find a light fixture that works for you.

Maybe add some photos of your inspiration (you'll find lots if you search the photos area on Houzz) and that will help others guide you towards pieces that will work for you.

I definitely plan on getting rid of everything else in the picture (and in my house!) Most of this stuff has been collected during college, so I'm ready to actually decorate now. The headboard just has sentimental value so I was hoping to find a way to keep it. Any suggestions for nightstand styles that won't be dwarfed and are modern?

Also, we live in an outdated rental at the moment. So no paint, fixture, or flooring changes yet. We intend on buying a house this year, but I'm impatient about replacing our tired college furniture in the meantime.

Please don't touch that lovely headboard. I see no reason you can't mix it up with more modern furniture. In fact it will stop the room from looking too sterile.

Look for night stands that compliment the headboard. I would lean toward rough rustic wood in the same color mixed with metal legs perhaps.

I agree with pennydesign and visualizemaven, Great suggestions. No way would I change that headboard since you and your father made it together. Painting it is not a bad option, though I like the natural element it brings to the decor as it is.

It is unfortunate you won't have one bedroom you can keep your present aesthetic. Yes, the side tables are too small but you have a repurposed look going and I think it works. Please leave the headboard as is, and if it can no longer be in your bedroom, well maybe a guest room? I think the window frames with mirror panes would improve their usefulness and help them make sense.

Don't buy furniture until you buy the new house!
