45x96 Island - 3 (12") or 2 (21") lantern pendants?
Our finished island will measure 45x96, which attempts to balance too many compromises - utility, work zones, clear zones, and seating. The one obvious issue is the distance from the 42" SZ side-by-side to the island.
Assuming we do not vary the island's dimensions or placement, we are next trying to decide on lantern pendant number & spacing. Bear in mind that we have a 7" wide lam beam spanning the kitchen ceiling, the center of which is approx. 24" from the island counter edge, which inhibits the location of the ceiling boxes (and results in the boxes being installed either 18" or 30" inboard of counter edge). This may favor 2 large pendants, rather than 3 small pendants. We will also install the same pendant above the 42" round table (see photo).

Comments (18)I had this exact same issue when I started designing my kitchen a few months back. My island will also be 6.5' long, and I ended up drawing the setup in autocad with the dimensions I was interested in. I ended up settling on the configuration in the image I attached. The island is 6.5 long, and the pendants are 14" in width. I think ultimately there's no right answer in a vacuum, depends on the other elements in your kitchen. Our island sits prominently in the middle of the kitchen and is the focal point when you first walk in. Our cabinets are also very simple, done purposefully so we could go a bit more extravagant on the finishing details including islanding lighting, hardware, and faucets. We played around with lights bigger than these and it didn't look right. We also played around with 2 light setups and it felt off to me. Comments (3)@marniemosiman - the only recessed lighting we're doing is in the kitchen and over the built ins at the far end of our living room. There is a 20" wide lantern and I thought about going in that direction, but I didn't know if something that big would look awkward in the space. Initially I thought I should move the rough-ins to 34 to 36, but the more I think and obsess about pendant size and spacing, 32 may be OK. 6 years ago@ Sativa McGee Designs - thank you for your feedback. The 60" walkway indeed feels large, however I neglected to mention that we have 2 young children who share a 2-step railed stair/stool (17Wx21Dx38H) that allows them to "help" in the kitchen, as well as a kid's IKEA 2x3 table, either of which we would locate at the head of the island and which would reduce signifcantly the fridge walkway. Granted, when the kids have outgrown these items, we'll find something else to close the gap - small bookcase with cutting board top, maybe.
We also heavily debated installing the ovens in the corner, except that doing so adds another step to the wall ovens from the island since moving the island closer by 1' closes in the french doors leading to our dining room (see photo and tape on floor). We're also giving up a 37x22 double pantry to fit the wall ovens, which is another sore spot, but the 60" walkway gives us an 18" tall pantry that, coupled with some hidden shallow storage in the island, helps to minimize the loss of the double-pantry. The pantry wall is also on a bearing wall, so I cannot rotate the studs to gain depth. The art of balanced compromise.
@BeverlyFLADeziner - thank you for the lighting guide. (3) 16" pendants would end up spaced 16" apart, which feels busy. The issue is that my wife likes odd numbers, so I am trying to convince her that two larger pendants over the island, plus one medium pendant over the round table, checks that box. Thoughts on 1 or 2 pendants over the sink?

6 years agoI personally would go with two. This from someone who loves things in 3's. 96" isn't that large of an island. If I were to do three I might choose one light fixture with a three light drop down like shown in the last photo.

6 years agoDecisions regarding home many lights often is determined by what the room "needs" in terms of accessories and contrast. Yes you can install two larger pendants or three smaller but it depends on the shape, the finish and how simple or complicated the design might be.
Can't you use a downlight over the sink?
