Beautiful new home...but I don't understand why the builder stuck the fireplace over to the side!!

Can you rotate the rug so the long dimension goes the other way? What is the 3rd black rectangle under the tv?

I would invest in having some cupboards/shelving built around the tv and the lower cabinet. I'd continue/replicate/enlarge the lower cabinet all the way across the wall and up to the upper shelf. It will make that wall more cohesive and the fireplace won't look so out of place to the side.

I was hoping some would have furniture suggestions for you, but maybe this dropped down too quickly.

There seems to be some here who are totally anti sectional, but I love mine. I think one would work very well in your space. You mentioned a chaise and I don't know if you meant attached to a sectional or a free standing one. I personally am not fond of an attached chaise but some folks love theirs. I think I'd prefer the versatility of a footstool used to mimic a chaise. I was thinking a piece with no arm/back would work well on the fireplace end. The arm would not block the fireplace and give you a place to sit and face the fireplace if you want. Kind of like this on the fireplace end, perhaps with your chaise at the other end:

The first thing I would be to take out the black built in for the tv components. It’s bizarre, and takes focus from the fireplace, which should be a focal point. I’m sure you could remove it yourself, and see what you have to work from there. I would add a wood mantel and second the opinion to get a carpenter to come in and design a some real built ins for that wall. Agree to rotate the rug. Look for an occasional chair that swivels so it can be used for tv watching as well as conversation.

You could try painting the tv component box the same color as the walls so that it doesn't stand out like it does now. That would help until you can add something more permanent..

Paint the entire TV wall black, floor to ceiling. Built ins would eat up your entire budget. Turn rug. Chaise & swivel chair. Check wayfair.com for chaise sofas and Best Furniture for swivel chairs for your price range. I would do a round coffee table with a chaise style sofa. Do inset roller solar shades in the windows so you can adjust for TV viewing.

I agree with Olychick. Keep the furniture for now, turn the rug and spend your money on the fireplace/TV wall.

I was immediately drawn to the orientation of the furniture in the first room Olychick posted. It shows a fireplace in the corner and tv to the right similar to the OP's room. By placing the seating at an angle, neither the tv nor the fireplace is "ignored". I know angling would not be everyone's cup of tea, but can't hurt to try something different just to see. If rectangles and right angles are important, though, I understand. Yes to turning the rug in any case.

That was my first thought, if you can't immediately afford to redo the wall next to the fireplace, at least paint the cabinet the same color as the wall so it doesn't stand out as much. But I would spend my money at least jazzing up the fireplace with a frame or mantle or something. And slightly angle my furniture.

As to swivel chair - would you enjoy the view out the window? swivel works.

Normally I'm anti-big brown leather pieces, but yours look in proportion and the room is light enought to accommodate them. Are they in poor shape or uncomfortabl?. I think a really great dining table and interesting chairs would add a lot to the space if the sofa and chairs can stay. They seem a little country-ish, not as modern as your other choices.

Oh, I didn't know you had brown and black sofas--thought they were both brown.

If you want to try it, could you move the cabinet with TV components in it, to be centered under the TV? Painted the wall color would be good .....this is just till you can get something built in along the wall.

sarah, I'm not 100% sure, but I think it was from a West Elm site. I just searched for the image and none came up. It was someplace weird because I couldn't save the photo to my desktop like I usually do for images, but had to take a screen shot to save it. I posted a pic of a West Elm nightstand that I think appears in the photo, bottom right, so it's probably a West Elm sectional - configured a bit larger than usually seen. I'll look some more later tonight or tomorrow and try to figure it out.

eta, I just tried one more thing and it was a pic posted by an interior design company on the West Elm blog (or something similar) to show how they used the end table. So the sectional could be from anywhere. Here is a screen shot with the name of the design firm, so you could try contacting them, too.

The painting is very nice and would go well in this room. I hope it fits, leaving some space on each side. Some turquoise and blue pillows on the furniture would be nice to bring in some color from the picture and brighten the dark furniture. That's a nice chair.
