Comments (28)Catholic school? Ha, ha! I knew we were kindred spirits!! I really like the way you can create a picture using patterns and such. That is a challenge to me. Yours are fantastic! I am rotten at trying to make shapes using glass. I have the cutters and nippers, but mostly I have to make my pictures out of pieces. I have learned to cut a straight line though and that comes in handy. :) So this is a watercolor I did in 1991. I went to college as an adult, a nice smaller Catholic college when I lived in Baltimore. I didn't need the degree for work, I was just doing it for my own satisfaction. So my degree is in English, along with a heavy emphasis on History and just to challenge myself I took quite a few art classes. I think because I got some encouragement, it allowed me to try different things I would not have had the courage to try otherwise and I found I had a real love of art. I took quite a few classes from Kevin Raines. He is an artist in his own right, taking inspiration from the Hudson River Valley artists. He makes beautiful watercolor paintings of nature in the Adirondacks. I drew this picture from a postcard I have of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. There is a wonderful national park there. It borders on Maryland and was not far from Baltimore, so I visited there many times. I was happy with the way it turned out and my boss loved it, so he paid to have it framed! It hung in my office for a long time and when I left I got to take it with me. It is a constant reminder of those fun days at college. It was so much better to go as an adult and enjoy every single minute. The teachers loved having adults as well because of the life experiences we brought to class. The program was geared toward working adults, so classes were Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays. Very convenient and I thank my boss for encouraging me to go to school and get my degree. As he so famously said "the time is going to pass anyway, why not do something good with it". Wise man! I have other paintings and pieces that I did at that time, but have not done anything with. I have one in mind that has a tea cup and tea bag in it. I should dig it up and share it here. :)...See MoreLiving Room makeover on a budget
Comments (8)On my monitor, your walls look very green. Going by what I see, I don't think yellow and teal would work. That said, you know how the room looks IRL. I would find a printed fabric and have roman shades made. You could have them be stationary so that would cut down on the cost, and you could install them above your shades. During the day, you can lift the shades behind the romans. I like your shelves, but not in that location. I would suggest moving it to the pot belly wall, but it would not work there. I would instead do a series of staggered shelves and display the photos there. I would remove the shelves in the entry and put a mirror and long narrow chest under it since you already have three pieces of furniture with legs. I am not a fan of rug on rug, but many here have done it successfully. (Shout out to AKTillery) so maybe they will chime in with advise. You have a lovely home and it's true that just a bit of tweaking will make a big difference....See MoreChanges on Houzz
Comments (29)After building a house and doing tons of decorating and seasonal changing of accessories, I tired of it, and stopped looking at the Home Decorating discussions side. I've recently, as in the past month or so, started going there again and the difference is astounding, especially the nastiness of several "pros" (and I use that term loosely, no professional I know, in any field, would ever speak like that to a client), it's as if they enjoy making sour comments. In the past I felt like GW members were very kind, sometimes too kind, as in not critical enough, but now, yikes, I cringe at some of the comments from those alleged pros and it does feel like a different place. And I'm not inclined to post over there, I know I would clap back, and not not gently. However, I've had no problems navigating on the site, but I rarely use my phone, mostly my ipad or laptop....See MoreShout out: Chi (and all) recipe for vegetarian stuffing
Comments (10)Eld6161, My chicken broth, that I make, could very easily be made vegetarian, just omit the chicken. You want celery, carrot, onion, garlic, and parsley. I save and freeze the scraps from other meals, but you could just use the whole vegetables. Cover with a good amount of water and simmer for an hour or so uncovered until it reduces. Strain through a sieve and freeze in 1/2, 1, and 2 cups containers. This makes a very mild broth. My dressing is a cornbread and stale sandwich bread dressing. If you want it, I will post. I use oysters, but have left out for grandson who is allergic. Use rice milk for moisture. Some vegetarians do eat fish and some don't. Like others said, by the time you use enough poultry seasoning, extra thyme, rosemary, and sage, that is what you taste. I would probably add some of the stronger mushrooms.
