Help creating raise bedding along driveway

Hi all,

We recently moved to a rather overgrown property. Since these photo's were taken I removed all the weeds and planted Alium bulbs (in September). These are pictures from both sides of the driveway. As you can see from the pictures it's not very wide but the plants growing there seem happy & healthy.

I although like to make it look a bit neater and easier on the eye, and thought the best way to achieve this on a budget is to raise this slightly using timber, fence or pine etc. Not very high, maybe 2 rows? What is the best wood to use that can be stained to a preferable colour like decking wood or will this be bad for the plants?

Can I add some plastic in-between the wood and the soil? Do I use normal garden compost to add to the current soil? I live in South West of England (Devon) warmer climate. PS - on the 1st photo it should run along the stone wall and on the 2nd photo the raise bedding should go along the fence.

Any recommendations and suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance - Marlize
