marble countertop owners...to hone or not to hone
Comments (10)rubyvine, before I sealed my honed marble, it was indeed like a sponge ... water soaked right in! I sealed it myself with 511 Impregnator available from Home Depot ... easy process: spray on, rub in and wipe excess off. Now water and other liquids stay on the surface. I've spilled all kinds of stuff on it: coffee, tomato sauce, soy sauce ... some of the drips sat overnight ... and no stains. I can't urge you strongly enough to get a good sized sample of the honed marble, seal it and then abuse it. Drip some lemon juice on it so that you'll know what etching looks like and whether or not you can tolerate it. Good luck! Erika...See MoreHoned Vermont Danby marble countertop owners... Love it or leave it???
Comments (144)Hope we didn’t make a mistake. Stone Source did not have any soaostone we liked. so we went with a honed black granite. I have seen somewhere that citrus might etch them which I was hoping to avoid with soapstone. They are honed on one side and leathered on the other. So, I might have to go with the leathered. I still chose Danby marble for my perimeter cabinets. I think I would like the honed granite better aesthetically to go with honed marble. Any thoughts while I have time?...See MoreMarble counters - honed vs polished
Comments (15)People in Europe having been using marble for their kitchens forver so it must not be bad. True. But keep in mind a couple of things. In many trips I have taken to France and Italy I cannot recall seeing polished marble, only honed. I am talking about café tables, bathrooms (a hotel room bathroom in Milan was every inch marble - honed - it did not look new, but it looked great), lobbies, stairwells, etc. Furthermore, in Europe there is not the "need for pristine" that North Americans have. It's a cultural difference, so to your point "it must not be bad", but that is their feeling about it, so just make sure you feel OK about etching. As mentioned, etching will look more pronounced against a polished surface than it will against a honed surface. Also buyer beware about the coatings for marble that I think @joseph_corlett is referring to. It is akin to plastic slipcovers on your grandma's sofa. It protects, and you can see the protected surface through the coating, but it won't look the same. If you are going to go to those lengths to protect the marble, so that it loses its unique beauty, you may as well get a different stone and not be bothered with needing any protector for it. There are granites and quartzites that do not even need to be sealed. Have you seen Taj Mahal quartzite?...See MoreNew calacatta light honed marble counter and backsplash. Need advice
Comments (0)The counter has an expensive anti-etch treatment to protect it. The backsplash is sealed, but doesn't have the anti-etch treatment because that process can't be done on verticle services. Does the backsplash need anything else done to protect it? I worry about spatters from the stove, etc. Thanks in advance for advice....See Morespramirezz
