What now?? transfer to new pots? can I use it??

Hi there! Super new to gardening of any sort and thought I’d give fresh indoor herbs a shot and yay!! I have some greenery!! :) now what? Should I transfer them to larger pots? Can I trim some basil leaves and use it? Will this kill the plant? Any advice is SO appreciated!!

You’ve done well to get them this far but I’m afraid I’m going to be a bit of a wet blanket. Those glass jars look cute but are far from an ideal environment for your plants. Personally, I would start afresh using proper plant pots with tops wider than their bases (it is very hard transplanting out of containers with narrower tops than bases) and drainage holes in the bottoms. (It is well nigh impossible to water properly in pots with no holes.) Meanwhile harvest the herbs you have and enjoy them.

Hi :) Generally, when you have herbs, trimming and using will help generate new growth until the season is over.

I agree with Floral_uk, though. There's no drainage in those jars, which is problematic.

edlincoln - they need better light immediately. They are very etiolated. I've never used those peat pellet things but I suggest you cut off the netting and transplant into pots asap. As to what temperatures those plants can take I can't help you with specifics but for growing hardy outdoor plants indoors in the winter you need as much light as possible and temperatures as cool as the species can take, so I'd put them in the patio room if it were me. You might even need plant lights.

I should have mentioned it is a bareroot rose from Pickering. They came in a black plastic bag, within another black plastic bag, and were bone dry no wet papertowels or anything! I went and soaked overnight in my wheelbarrow, canes, roots and all with about a Tbsp of Superthrive in about 8 gallons of water give or take. The roses did come dry. There were 3 of them. Two of them look good. One looks ok but has only one side of roots. Weird. They had white looking buds all over them though, so they are still alive. OK, so what I did after planting them now is mounded up with my fine pine mulch only to cover most of the canes with the tips sticking out. I'll remove them in a couple of weeks. They aren't leafed out yet, but will the mulch hurt if they had those white looking buds? Should I have removed all the white buds? I guess they started to grow out inside the black plastic bags a little. Thanks for all your help and suggestions! Cathy

Some people will just stick them away some place safe and dry, others will stick them in soil and perlite for the winter. If it were me, I would allow them to callous then pot them up. Do you have a heat mat? Bottom heat is most important when it comes to cuttings. Allow to callous for a couple of weeks if they aren't already calloused. Apply rooting hormone and pot in clear plastic 16 or 20 ounce water bottles. (You can see when they root.) Poke drain holes in the bottom. Different people use different soils. Many of us use 1 part soiless mix, 1 part perlite. Some of us use the egg method. You can do a search on this forum. During the growing season, we would water once, and then not again until you see roots. Hopefully someone else will come along and give advice on watering your cuttings at this time of year. Maybe just a little water, maybe water as you normally would a cutting? I think it's important to get more advice on this one. When I rooted my first cuttings it was during the winter and I watered. But I was a newbie and lucky all turned out good. LOL Keep warm, heat mat would be ideal.

If you replant in moss do it every 9-12 months because material breaks down faster than bark. Repot after bloom has stopped or in spring when new growth appears. It likes to be moist, not wet and avoid wetting leaves as this leads to spotting on the leaves which is not fatal but unattractive. It's a problem that oncidiums have frequently. Soak it well before repotting as roots are small and brittle and use plastic or ceramic pot and small bark to keep it happy. Likes to summer outdoors but watch out for squirrels voles and chipmunks; they like to chew on the bulbs. Under a tree with 1/2 day of sun should be good and if you have a screened in porch that would be good too. Bring indoors when night temps are below 50 degrees F.

Hi there,

In addition to the good advice you've received regarding using a pot that drains, it looks like they need more sunlight.

But absolutely, use the leaves. Ideally, once your plant forms its second set of "real leaves," you begin pinching. I drew this out for my sister who is just growing her first basil plant from seed. (I tried explaining it to her on the phone, and you'd think I was trying to tell her how to launch a rocket.) Hope it helps you too!
