When do I transfer seedlings to pots?

I'm growing some Beach Pea, Norway Spruce, and Aster from seed in those little plugs in a dome. My goal is to use them as house plants all winter, then plant them outside in the spring...but I didn't take into account short winter days.

I want to transfer them to pots and give them to my parents (who have better light). My parents have a patio room that is effectively an UNHEATED greenhouse and also a kitchen with south facing windows.

The question is, when do I remove them from the tray and put them in pots?

They are a little over a week old. A couple have a few really tiny leaves and a loong stem. Some have stems so long that they are hitting the top of the dome, but no leaves.

When I put them in pots and give them to my parents they will have better light but less consistent temperature and humidity.

When I do move them, will they be better off in the UNHEATED room that is all windows, or just the windowsill of a kitchen with South facing windows and florescent lights?

Most importantly...when do I move them to better light?

edlincoln - they need better light immediately. They are very etiolated. I've never used those peat pellet things but I suggest you cut off the netting and transplant into pots asap. As to what temperatures those plants can take I can't help you with specifics but for growing hardy outdoor plants indoors in the winter you need as much light as possible and temperatures as cool as the species can take, so I'd put them in the patio room if it were me. You might even need plant lights.

IF YOU PURCHASED THEM THIS WINTER AND THEY HAVE FINISHED BLOOMING, THEN IT IS NATURAL FOR THE FOLIAGE TO DIE BACK. I WOULD WAIT UNTIL THE WEATHER IS WARMER, PAST THE FROST DATE, TO PLANT THESE OUTSIDE. AS THEY DIE BACK, DON'T OVERWATER THEM AS THEY MAY ROT BUT DON'T LET THEM COMPLETELY DRY OUT IN THE HEAT OF THE HOUSE EITHER. IT MAY TAKE THEM A COUPLE YEARS TO REBLOOM, AND THE TULIP MAY NOT DO WELL; TULIPS ARE TRICKY HERE, NOT LIKING OUR HEAT OR HEAVY SOILS. IF THE RODENTS DON'T EAT THE BULBS THE HYACINTH SHOULD RECOVER AND LIVE FOR YEARS OUTSIDE. I HAVE SEVERAL THAT ARE OVER 10 YEARS OLD.

GA, are you growing your seedlings under fluorescent lights? If so, you need to move them much closer to the tubes--they should be no more than 2" away from the tubes at the very most and 1" is probably better. Leave them in the current containers but get them more light immediately so that they thicken up. Good luck!

I like all of your methods; Used all variations depending on conditions and circumstances. At one planting this year i have planted a few flats with seed rows oriented the longer direction of a 1020 tray, a few with seed rows oriented in shorter crossrows and one 48 cell tray with a few seeds of a different variety within each cell. Keeping good records and mapping each tray is important if you want to distinguish varieties and keep track of germination rates. I only caution those who use this method to allow older seed a few extra days and often it works better to group newer and older seed so you don't need to transplant individual rows (or cells) out of sequence. Planting to larger containers is often dictated by space under lights. I ran out of space under my 26 shoplights and , as of yesterday , all of my first batch of tomatoes are moved into a greenhouse. Half of those will go into the ground of a high tunnel in a few weeks, a few will be potted up and eventually sold in gallon pots or larger and the rest will be recycled. I would not suggest that everyone follow my methods but when any single potted plant needs water more than twice a week it is time for me to repot. Even a greenhouse can run out of space quickly if you have a lot of plants in larger pots.
