Do You Need Separate Internet Plus A Smart TV?

We are market-pressured to buy a larger screen TV at our vacation rental condo on Maui.

We currently have a six-year-old "non-smart" Samsung 32" HDTV -- made "smart" via a Sony Blu-ray.

Our condo association has a contract that provides internet and two cable boxes to each condo; each owner also pays $5.50/mo. to the company -- which has variously been Time-Warner, Oceanic Time-Warner, and is now Spectrum (owned by Charter).

I understand that a smart TV has internal internet , so it can stream without the Blu-ray. But...would it's internet allow connection for the laptop on which I am typing this message?

Is there any reason not to buy a smart TV? Would I still need the Spectrum modem/router?

I don't believe there is good OTA reception here, hence the need for the cable service. Would Firestick be useless here?
