Comments (3)Tile or Vinyl would be the most resilient options if you're concerned about pets, both with respect to wear-and-tear and urine. If you want natural hardwood or bamboo then you're going to have to face the reality that scratching will occur if the pets are large enough. That said, here are a few things to consider: 1. Lighter floors do not show scratching as much as darker. 2. A little pet maintenance by trimming their nails routinely goes a long way to saving your floors. 3. Consider distressed options as they have wear-and-tear built in. 4. If you get a slightly stained floor, you can always semi-conceal scratches with a furniture pen. 5. If you ever completely destroy a board, there is a process for removing and replacing - it isn't easy but can be done....See MoreEmily Morrow Home or Other Durable Engineered Floors with Dogs

Comments (6)We have hardwood everywhere on our main and second floors. Our 75 lb. GR has figured out he needs to limit his "zoomies" to the area rugs or 3rd floor carpeted game room where he can get better traction. I don't find him any more destructive to our floors than our 4 kids were as teenagers. Our satin sheen does a pretty good job of hiding scratches and paw prints. We keep his nails trimmed, and accept that our house is meant to be lived in. It will never be pristine, or I'd be vacuuming up dog hair 3x a day! If you want hardwood, don't let having a GR prevent that. And I say no to tile flooring--it'll be hard on your dog's joints as it gets older, and given the breed's predisposition to hip problems, not a good idea....See MoreCreative Ceramic & Marble/ Bill Vincent
