Refresh needed in the Pacific Northwest

I'm updating the living room and changing the neutral color from brown to gray. I need fabric and pillow ideas for the window seat. I'd also love a new or additional rug but it needs to be low pile because anything else will harbor fleas (two dogs, two cats).

Pacific Northwest lawn full of moss....HELP
Comments (2)MossÂ..where there is dampness Âmoss can grow Â.mostly in shade but sometimes in full sun. Moss is usually in areas of low nutrition. If you starve your lawn, not fertilize it when it needs it, then it is a candidate for moss to grow. Rake it out. Throw some compost over the area. Topcoat with compost or topsoil and fertilzie. Aeration is a preferred method of removal butÂmay have to be done annually. Dig it out and re-sod. Put down generous amounts of limeÂÂthe area will be very acidicÂ.possibly there are a number of acidic plantsÂ.evergreens and suchÂ..which can leach their effective pH into the soil nearby. If there are areas where the ground has depressions, moisture can be retained longer. Where possibly gardens have a great deal of mulch, and are shaded, the mulch makes the drying of the soil that much harder to accomplish when early spring rains and snow-melt add to it. Comments (4)Both the thujopsis or the oak will be far too large for that space...and neither are particularly narrow (like not at all). And both grow very slowly compared to a lot of other possibiities. One tree I use a lot for privacy screening is the columnar European hornbeam 'Frans Fontaine'. It is a virtually problem-free tree, grows moderately rapidly and has a very dense, upward sweeping branch system that provided pretty effective screening even when the tree is out of leaf. Comments (2)Agree that a small outdoor area given over to large dogs in particular = equivalent to zoo exhibit. In other words the impacts from the dogs will dominate how it looks (and smells), how it will have to be managed. Regarding the neighbor the natural choice for a screening planting in your climate and soil conditions is western redcedar (Thuja plicata). With there being an existing landmark sized example visible in the distance, just to the right of your house. And maybe a grouping of currently smaller ones over the fence, behind the two broadleaf trees. Such an installation can be sheared to control size once the desired level of privacy is acheived. As long as the lower sides are kept wider than the upper half, so as to prevent the upper shading the lower too much and making it become thin looking. This is how it usually is with plant choices for hedging and screening - the fast growing ones that provide the desired effect with any level of quickness are also large growing, genetically programmed to grow vastly bigger in time than the typical modern planting site. Comments (6)Patricia, I agree with you, a larger deck to replace the very small porch would help with the back of the house. This is technically the front door but it faces away from the street. For practical purposes, we can park in the driveway for the garage and enter through the garage, or there is another driveway 8 feet higher, at level with the "front door". The area that you see without windows is actually the kitchen and dining room. I will post a photo from the inside, as it stands now with the current owner's furnishings. I am thinking about modernizing the kitchen and adding windows around both sides of the house in all of that closed in space, expanding the cabinetry to have lots of base cabinets, a very large large island running longways with lots of large drawer space, and no upper cabinets. I am going to do a rough mock up of a dark paint color on the house and post it later for feedback....See More
