This will be my second year of growing Garlic and like yourself I was anxious to see what would happen and I dug a few up prematurely. However, if you planted them a few weeks ago and they have started to sprout and grow tall I would say they are ok where you planted them. I would leave them alone for now. The really hard part is going to be next May / June, when you are really going to want to pull them up, but don't. Wait until the stalks fall over. I pulled a few early in May / early June and the bulbs were much smaller then the ones I pulled in late June. Good luck -- One last tip... Roasted Garlic Soup.... Very good.

Hi Kmarissa! Are those window boxes moveable? I have window boxes too but I have liners inside them so I can remove those and plant and such. Makes it much easier. If they are then you could either put the liners, plants and all, inside an unheated garage or you can sink them into the ground somewhere in your garden for the winter. Make sure there are good drainage holes in your liners either way so they don't rot. If you put them in a shed or garage you have to remember to give them a little water each month. I get plenty of snow here so I always put a shovel full of snow on the pot tops when we shovel. They don't need a lot of water but they will need some. If you sink them in the ground outside they'll be fine with whatever rain or snow they get over the winter. If they are not removable then I'm afraid your best bet is to transplant them into pots of some kind and then winterize the pots. I don't think there is anyway they'll survive up in the air like that through a freezing winter. With so little soil it will undoubtedly freeze solid and kill the roots. Here are some hints on potting roses up. Always make sure you use good light weight potting soil that drains very well. Make sure your pots have several good drainage holes. If they only have one in the center drill in two or three extra ones around the outer edge or lowest spot in the pot. Never use the trays that come with the pots. They hold the water in the pot and the roses rot. Put the pots up on wire pot trolleys or blocks so the bottoms are off the ground and the water can drain freely from them. Pots will always dry out quicker than the ground so watch them closely for water, particularly when it's very hot out. Because you have to water pots more frequently you will also have to fertilize them a little more often too. All that good drainage will wash out some nutrients. Any good well balance fertilizer will do. I start out with a slow release in the spring and then again maybe the beginning of August. In between I use fish emulsion and Miracle Grow liquid foliar feeding. For rooting cuttings I use 16 oz. clear plastic cups with a hole in the bottom. With the clear cups you can actually see when the cutting has rooted without having to disturb the soil. I use Seed Starter soil instead of potting soil because it's much lighter weight. I leave them in the cups until the bottoms of the cups are full of roots before moving them up to a 1 gallon size pot. The one gallon pots then get sunk into the soil in the garden and buried in leaves for winter. Make sure you put up markers where you've buried them. The first year I didn't do this and come spring I had a heck of a time finding where they were and then not breaking them when I dug them out.

smirk-smirk...feed stores?! wo-ah! i am in the middle of the mega-city! if i can't carry it in a pocket i shouldn't buy it! i do load up like a mule for 'garden weights training' from time to time ;), but storing anything is a MAJOR problem. so my puny alfalfa bottle with pills will have to do for now. even that might turn out too smelly for DH! we'll see ;). with corms/bulbs i can always put it in an enclosure for the beginning treatment. warmer weather for ventilation will help too - which means at least 60s outside - i have a lot of tropicals that dislike cold drafts. limitations, limitations...dancing on the pinhead develops virtuosity ...and miniaturization ;). i have severely cut down my older huge leaves in 2 sans pots, leaving mostly younger shoots from past summer. i am actually hoping to reduce them in size and then combine 2 into 1. it's ANOTHER experiment... i do want fat wide leaves however - so alfalfa with good light on the balcony in summer should be good.

As for the drill bits, Rina is correct, they are specialty bits. I actually found mine back by where they sell tile, not by the drill stuff. And mine is like the first picture, not the second. Its circular with a hole in the middle. I keep water on it while drilling, and gentle pressure. You have to be patient! Also, I think the water may be the cause of my drill giving out on me. The chuck was stuck. I could not get it to move for nothing! I tried CLR (I noticed some rust inside of it). I also tried WD40. I could've just replaced the chuck but I couldn't get the hex screw driver down the middle. The chuck was stuck with a bit in it. :-( And MsGreenFinger - thank you for the information! I tried a taste of it alone, and I did not like it!!! So I don't know if I would like anything with just sage (e.g. tea, mouthwash, etc.) but I am going to try it on some pork soon, and maybe even some chicken. :-) Deva
