HELP: Online Monstera Deliciosa Gone Wrong! (Split Leaf Philodendron)

Ordered some houseplants online off of Amazon this week and everything came in more or less healthy EXCEPT two Split Leaf Philodendron/Monstera Deliciousa/Swiss Cheese Plants came in very sickly. We had a freak snow storm in Atlanta this week so I think delivery was delayed one day, and they may have gotten cold.

Issue:

- The stems are bent (not broken)

- Leaves are limp and have dark spots.

- Soil was bone dry.

- A newer leaf that is lighter in color is curling.

Current Solution:

- I currently have them sitting on a box in a west facing window to grab the last sunlight (5:00 pm).

- I have the leaves and stems propped up facing up towards the light.

- I have watered it until water was coming out the drainage holes and soil was moist but not soacked.

Does anyone know how to get this guy to stand up on his own?

Is this common for this plant when ordered online?

Should I repot it?

Hello..

So sorry for your Monsteras :(

I think you need open and see the roots.. is that ok? how about main stick? if main stick ok.. you can put then on new soil.. and wait new leaf

Broken Sticks leaves. i think it would not stand up.. you need cut the bad leaves..

All you can do is wait and see if there's any sign of recovery. Keep them warm and don't over water.

I have a verigated monstera that i got from logees a couple of years ago. Yes, it was expensive but i had been eyeing it in there catalogue and just took the plunge and bought it. i have no regrets it is a beautiful plant. I live in Washington state and mine is indoors. My sister who lives in savanah, Georgia also bought one at the same time. Her leaves are twice as big as mine and she keeps hers on her front deck outside. Her monstera looks like a bush because the leaves are so big and mine looks like a vine with big leaves. :(( We have come to the conclusion that the difference is her plant is outside and the humidity there in savanah. She leaves it outside all year. So light levels and humidity do make a difference.

The E. pinnatum/aureum story is that some time back someone managed to convince the boffins that aureum was in fact a variation of pinnatum. Later the boffins changed their minds again and decided it wasn't, so it went back to aureum. But E. pinnatum was always there, so whilst it now can be a synonym of aureum, it's also a species in its own right. This is one of my pinnatums (unless it has been changed, or it was mis-identified for me years ago). Leaves on juvenile plants are entire, but some mature plants have pinnate leaves. I guess I should do a thorough study of the flowers to find out for sure. I should have some taxonomic descriptions of epipremnum and monstera.

I bought a split leaf 2 years ago at a yard sale for $2. When I got it, there was only 2 small leaves. Since then, I would say it is about 3 1/2 - 4 ft tall and about 7-8 ft in diameter. There are so many leaves:) I love it, but I need to prune it back some because after I transplanted it into a new pot, the leaves are pointing in different directions and some of them are upside down now. I have tried to prop them up to face the right way, but I am afraid of breaking the thin stock. For some reason, their branches are thicker than the base. So, how would I go about pruning the leaves back? Do I just cut them where I would want it, or is there a certain spot on the branch, base, or what I call (conjunction-a cluster of branches from one place)? I won't do anything to it until I know it won't hurt it. This thing likes to grow fast!!! I can almost guarantee that I won't be able to find this place again on the web, so if you know the answer to my question, please email me at cpenena@hotmail.com. Very much appreciated.

This plant is mislabeled so often and goes under so many different names, its hard to know what to call it. To my knowledge, the CORRECT name is Epipremnum pinnatum "Ginny". But it is also sold as a Rhaphidophora, as a Philodendron, as "Dwarf Climbing Monstera" and I have even seen it labeled as a Pothos (go figure). This is not really a houseplant. Its not a terrarium plant either although I have seen it being sold as one. While it is true that the LEAVES only get about 4 x 6 inches, the plant itself is a rampant climber and will quickly outgrow the ordinary trellis. The stems are larger in diameter than a finger, and the plant sends out aerial roots that can exceed 12 FEET in length. The terrestrial root system is extremely extensive as well and it will quickly outgrow a container. The plant I have grows from the ground up to over 12 feet above the ground, wraps onto everything it can get a hold of, has multiple vines over 20 ft in length, and has to be pruned back about 4 times a year to keep it like that. The aerial roots drape down and make for a very jungle-like appearance, its pretty cool. I have to walk under and through them all the time. You can probably train it to grow in a window on a "hanging trellis" (a cord or something attached to the wall so it can go around in a circle) but otherwise, if you give it enough light to make it happy enough to grow well, you are going to be needing to prune it back sooner rather than later.

The leaves appear to be too far gone. The newest leaf may pull through. The stems should be fine though. I would cut the leaves, leaving the newest one alone, and let the petioles die back naturally on their own. Keep them in a bright shaded spot and keep them warm, and they'll start growing again from the leaf nodes.

I would still contact the place you purchased them from and send them this photo and see what, if any, options there might be for a refund or replacement.

Thanks everyone! I took the advice and repotted, cut the leaves back and placed in a bright window shaded by an oak tree so no direct light. Hopefully I can revive!

Looks like they may have frozen. If so, not much you can do.

Yeah, taking a closer look, it looks like the seller didn't give you very much stems to work with. All I see there are the petioles, which connect the leaves to the stems. New growth will only emerge from the stems, and you weren't given much of that to even work with. So I would ask for a refund or replacement, if at all possible.
Here's a closeup of my plant's stems. They're what the roots are emerging from, as well as the petioles. Looking closer at your photo, I don't see any stems whatsoever. To me, it looks as though the seller just snipped off a couple of short growth tips and stuck them in some pots.

Have you unpotted them? Do they have any roots at all? If so, then they might pull thru. Just as long as the stems, what little of them there are, are still firm and viable. Under ideal conditions, these plants just might make it. But unless you got these for a very cheap price, then they weren't worth whatever price you paid for them. My first ever Monstera was a very healthy, well-rooted plant with multiple stems and at least a dozen or so leaves, and it only cost me around seven dollars. I've seen large, two-gallon sized pots of Monsteras for sale at Home Depot for just over twelve dollars.

I just took a quick glance of the selection over on Amazon and none of them seemed reasonably priced. Even if these plants didn't suffer any cold damage, I wouldn't find these cuttings acceptable. Not for those prices. Places like Home Depot or Lowe's sell large Monsteras for only $12.98. Much more bang for your buck. Get your money back and shop elsewhere. If the seller doesn't work with you, then post a negative review, along with your photo. They ripped you off.
