What didn't work about the clock? Perhaps the scale wasn't right?

I think that putting something up there will draw attention to the fact that things are not centered. I would keep the focus lower, including using lamps rather than the ceiling lighting.

Is it possible for you to extend the curtains so that they go over the door too? It will really help create symmetry on that wall. I probably wouldn't add anything above there. Not all walls need something.

I want to move the sofa to be in line with the windows, and see what that does to the space.

Nothing. Set the room with an invisible "waterline" where a normal ceiling would be and decorate accordingly, ignoring what's above. Let the volume above just be what it is.

If you really want to decorate the ceiling, then do it with a paint color. If you make it darker than the wall color, it will help bring the ceiling down some.

When someone posts a space like this usually I say "decorate where the people are". But I think your space is not as overwhelming as many we see here.

if you find something that is the right scale AND ties in with the rest of the room, I think the wall can be made more interesting. Don't go to Kirklands and find some random metal sculpture and stick it up there. Take some time and think of something that enhances the whole space and reflects your style and family's personality.

It might be a perfectly sized painting or an art gallery banner or a large antique sign or a large framed map of your favorite place. Brainstorm with your family and come up with ideas. Good luck!

Do you use your ceiling fan? A large interesting light fixture, hung lower than your fan could be a nice way to fill the space. A large lantern or globe fixture might work.

are you wedded to your panels? a color that layers the wall color (this is to say, far less contrast than your dark drapes now) will look less boxy and de-emphasize the off centered-ness. then you can also choose art or whatever that is a softer color and it will still show up nicely.

I can see that you might have invested quite a bit of money in your curtains. Curtains that are fairly similar to the color of the wall or lighter will make rooms look larger and less chopped up, but changing these might not be an option for you. I would draw attention further down and try to integrate the curtains into your scheme by having a large, colorful rug that has the same degree of darkness as the curtains, although you can also have lighter colors in it. Then take some of those colors and use them for pillows to pull the space together. If you create more color and interest below, no one will notice what's high above, or isn't. I would also stack two or three colorful paintings on the wall to the left of the door to create more interest and individuality in your room.

Can you move the sofa more centered under the window? If you can, then put a floor lamp behind the sofa, directly under the peak of the ceiling. That way, there is something 'centered' under the center peak. At first glance, it looks like more of a matter of balance than anything else.

Perhaps a gloss-on-matte paint finish. It could alleviate that feeling of needing to hang something in the space. Subtle design, subtle effect.
