Design Dilemma Fireplaces living room

Large living room space needs definition

My LR is 26' x 16' and opens to my kitchen/island area. I would like to define spaces within it, either through furniture placement or area rugs...not sure what to do, as there is a large fireplace that should be the focal point, but also a TV on the opposite wall...focus of some in the house! Looking for ideas.

Part of the issue is you have this large, grand space, and are trying to define it with tiny chairs. You need a sofa or something larger to really ground it. Rugs are also going to be your best friend in this.

Two focal points: Two rugs, alike. Two sofas placed back to back with console between.

@Patricia, you have a good point. I think I will definitely want to consult a designer to get their perspective from an aesthetics/space usage mindset. I do have a large media room in the lower level where my big screen is, so I figure if I ever have a large group to watch a game, etc., that is likely where I will need the most seating. The upstairs could then be used more generally for entertaining. My dining table seats 10 and moving it into living area would allow me to add chairs on either end. The addition of a 9-10’ Island would add seating as well. At worst, the family in its current footprint could snugly fit a ~6-7 person sectional and a chair. I think with an additional ~2-3’ feet in length and width, I should easily be able to fit a sectional in there as well as 1-2 accent chairs. Plus if I’m entertaining there would be plenty of space to gather at the end of the kitchen where the new bar would be. These pictures are not by any means exactly what I would do (I used a trial version and stock colors/cabinets), but should help give a sense of layout.

It looks like you have a couple of options for focal areas here. Based on the shape of the room and the locations of your means of egress too and from the room, the most logical focal point is your window/televison wall. Once you choose your focal point, direct the furniture around it. A large sectional or a couple of sofas will help with balancing the scale of the room. Larger, rectilinear pieces such as these will be a great starting point to establishing appropriate spacial definition. Having the largest seating piece facing the television with a console table or cabinet off the back of it, and a large area rug to ground it all will help to define your living area. In addition, a small seating area with a couple of chairs and an accent table, a tall shelving unit, or desk would each be a great option off the wall where your sofa is currently placed.
