2018 Orchid Show. AnyOne Going?

I came to see if there was any posting about THIS years show. And there is nothing here. Am I the only person going? Somehow I doubt it. I usually have to park a half mile away, and grab the best plants on my first walk around the room. So many people. Cant bargain on Saturday, and risk loosing the only 'Digbyana' in the show! I get at least 1 a year, They all bloom at different times of the year for me here in Ft.laud. took me a long time to figure out if I had a 'REAL Digbyana' or not. So I have a few 'crosses', that are not 'pure'.....but they are still very pretty and smell great at night:)

So...who's going, and any hints on who to look for to buy from? Anything new and special this year, some new Catt. crosses, or some other special orchid to look for, that grows and blooms HERE??

The annual Ft.Lauderdale Orchid Society show and sale. Every January, at our local War Memorial auditorium. It is this Fri-Sun. About 15-20 professional orchid sellers, and local orchid growers/amateurs, show off their home grown orchids, to win prizes/ribbons, it is a show and sale. New crosses, from the private growers, and some of the pro's.

The sales/booths are orchid growers from around Fla. some from Taiwan/Hawaii/Philippines, but most are from all around Fla. It is the last flower/plant show left in Ft.laud.

We use to have a huge spring plant sale, that took up the entire outside of the auditorium, (like a park), dozens and dozens of growers ,nursery's, and you could buy very common plants, or the newest orchids or newest plants on the market, before they came to market! It was the best show ever! Went to it for 2 decades. But politics closed managed to close it down! The city wanted more money to rent the space, and the War Memorial wanted more money from the vendors, so they priced themselves out of the event, no one wanted to pay more and more to rent a space that once was free, then tickets to get in, and pay to park. It just got to expensive to even get in to just LOOK. Let alone buy plants.

Now we have no plant shows/sales, it was called "The Plant Affair"...now we only have The Orchid Show/Sale, in January. It's great, for Orchids, but thats it.

Silva orchids may not have a red phal, but they have the most beautiful Christmas red Potinara Redheart "Neptune" that I ever saw. Carter and Holmes wanted $75 for their red one, but Silva only wanted $35. My plant is fully grown now and I get six or nine gorgeous red flowers every year. Parkside is well worth the effort to see. The six greenhouses are all neat and clean, and the plants are meticulously well groomed. The staff is very patient and helpful. They have far more plants than they list on their website. Thirty-five dollars may seem like a lot of money, but a healthy plant doesn't require money spent on insecticides and weeks of trying to eradicate a seige of insects or weeks of trying to coax roots on a plant that was overwatered, or months of patiently waiting for a flower spike.

Thanks Babs. I sometimes see a few scales even now, and I just pick them off with a Q-tip with a little alcohol. But when it's outdoors, when it's warm, I actually really blast the whole tree with the garden hose. I go all over, under, around etc. with quite a strong spray of water. I hold each leaf and make sure it's clean. Really not that hard to do, and only once is fine. It really helps to remove debris, scales etc. The plant seems to enjoy it!

Nekobus, I think that this is its third season in the ground here. My texensis is a bit rangier than many hybrid clematis and the nursery says 10-12’. Mine has gotten close to that, but it is difficult to judge since it climbs a 5’ trellis and then rambles across and through some shrubs. I know it had a relatively long bloom of several weeks, but not a lot at any one time. Unfortunately, I only took photos early in the season around now, but was gone for a good chunk of July and August, so I don’t remember exactly how long it bloomed for. I will try to keep better track this year.

Guess I'm going alone,....as usual. Might go Friday afternoon, instead of Sat. morning. Different crowd, might find the orchids I want on Friday. Usually go Saturday morning, only going 1 time, one ticket cost enough.

There are a few Fl. shows I'd love to attend -- Redlands being one of them. Unfortunately, too expensive with airfare, food, lodging .... I'd need a free place to crash to at least alleviate some of the cost. Too bad I don't have any family down there.
