Hosta of the Year 2017? Your Choice...
Comments (20)I totally agree with you, Steve. The Benedict Award is the real deal. But I have to say, even the HOTY award has included a lot of good ones, marketing gimmick or not. There are a couple/few glaring exceptions to this LOL, but overall, not too bad. NOT to be compared to the Benedict accolades though, because if you get enough hostas ready for market (volume) of course you can knock that price down to within 15 bucks. Which is why (in my opinion) they, being the Hosta Growers Association (correct title?) have the winners of HOTY 2 to 3 years in advance. They gotta get that hosta machine going to meet the demand. I see the scheme from a mile away. Some great plants in the HOTY category, nonetheless. Could be worse, though. If the Supreme Leader of the Hosta Universe were Dave/Bragu, we'd have Lancifolia for HOTY. Isn't that why WWII was waged? So Lancifolia would never again raise it's lancy head for dictatorship of the hostas? (Just playin' Bragu) : ) Don B....See MoreHosta Z 2017
Comments (20)I had bought two ZZ plants for my office at work. One at westward window and one in the office near the printer (I always put plants around the printer to collect the fine dust). The one near the printer grew much better than the one on the windowsill (another shade tolerant plant)...But in the office they got really dusty with time and so I carried them outside into the rain for a few times and then gave them away. I'd love to get one for my home but it is like outside, everything covered with plants and no room left...Lat week I made divisions of a large old Sanseveria and need to find new homes for them now. What a pity you are all so far away :-)...See MoreHosta Giants 2017
Comments (31)Great Giants. My biggest giant counting both leaf and mound is probably Niagara Falls. One year when I was measuring there were quite a few leaves above 17 inches. It survived being transplanted a few years ago and now has the advantage of having elbow room - a rarity in my garden. Green Gables (Sum and Sub sport) leaves have gotten to over 20" though the mound is not as enormous as others. I am in trouble with the garden below. Every year I have to move some of the giants and very large ones out of the back row. I am being swallowed by Hoosier Dome and Piedmont Gold in 2016...See MoreHosta Medium 2017
Comments (43)Sunnywood- I know you’re enjoying Hawaii... how can you not?! We were there a couple of years ago and I was absolutely entranced by the plant life. I took so many pictures... and thankfully my DH didn’t mind going to botanical gardens with me - fascinating! I doubt you’ll see any hostas there, but you have beautiful hostas to come home to. Well, the alphabet in general, and this thread in particular, is making me realize that I need to get better about taking pictures. I have a bunch that are technically mediums, but no photos (or none worth sharing)....See Morewindymess z6a KC, Ks
