Which alert? Are you talking about the incoming missile alert for Hawaii??? Oh my gosh, it was a false alarm! Those poor people, on another forum I read a link to twitter comments and some were huddled in stairwells!

Yes, the false missile alert. How horrifying! And 38 minutes for them to send out a correction! Wow.

I've been angry that there is no opt out, but Colbert found a work around: The comments are hilarious. Alert work around I'm curious just what kind of emergency people think this will be necessary for everyone all over the country with a cell phone to receive at the same time? Nuclear attack? If it hits LA, does NY need to hear about it via alert or wouldn't our regular methods be sufficient. Like what are people going to do, start building a bomb shelter after they hear an alert? It's crazy.

Surely I'm not the only one????? That feels a bit like persecution, lol. It happened AGAIN today. I had an alert for two new messages. I went through both the old and new inboxes, and the TWO OLDEST messages were showing as new. These weren't even messages I had received, but two that I had SENT...in 2016! This seems to be a glitch in the new mailbox, since it's there they keep reappearing as new. I'm not even going to bother with reporting the issue at this point, as it's basically an exercise in futility. Sooooooooo...if anyone sends me a message and you don't get an answer right away, it's because I'm ignoring the alerts! Apologies in advance. John

Aloha, moonie! Oh, yes indeed. We got the alert on our 'secondary' cell phone first. Then we got it on our 'home' cell phone.

It would have been weird to receive this while we were home in Illinois.

There was no alert via the condo's land line. Now I'm wondering if the system thinks *everyone* in Hawaii has cell service.

We had been watching CNN. In a few minutes, they had a story about the false alert. A few minutes later, each cell alerted again with the "Whoops" message.

Chisue, did you take any action? What would you do in such a case that wasn't a false alarm? What were the reactions if neighbors? Are there fallout shelters near you?

Two of my SILs are in Kona with their husbands for another month. I heard from them and she (younger) said we would be pleased to know they can still run. They sheltered in place (back at condo) and filled bathtubs and kitchen cookware with an emergency water supply.

Not a good morning, they were shaken but fine now.

Living in an area surrounded by military bases and it used to be surrounded by missile silos supposedly empty of missiles it makes no sense to take cover. If where you are is a direct hit you are toast. If any hits in your surrounding area and happens to be nuclear you will wish that you had died. Beyond the surrounding area it will depend on the way the wind carries any thing. Most people in this area knew this back when Whiteman Air Base was ringed with missiles and it still is true today. Live each day as if it is your last and carry on like you normally would. Since I have seen patrols at some of the silos some are probably still active.

There was zero reaction at our condo complex. Visitors get more upset when the monthly tsunami siren sounds -- even though we are up on a rise and never need to evacuate.

It was just so 'outlandish' that DH and I didn't give the alert credence. We would have reacted differently if sirens had been sounding here, but they were not.

All we *could* do is shelter in place, closing doors and windows and waiting for some time for fallout to settle. One wag here said he'd get himself to Maalaea harbor and steal a boat to get to New Zealand.
