rug style suggestions

22 with my first house! Need advice on an area rug in the living room to pull things together. The living opens to the dining (photographed) which has a rug that is tan/gray with black, white, gray accents. The walls in both rooms are a light gray/silver. The couch in the living room is a very dark brown suede. Suggestions?? Keep in mind i have a dog that sheds like no other (Aussie)!! Dog kennel no longer in that spot.

First the T>V. is mounted way too high , the center of the screen should be at eye level when you are seated. The furniture seems really large for the space so I would not bother with a rug since anything large enough will cover most of the floor. You need a coffee table not brown or wood IMO and maybe just a cowhide under it. Something like this. You also will need a shallow cabinet under the T.V look at Ikea Besta for one the right width and depth.

I have yellowed knotty pine on the walls of my late 40s/early 50s beach cottage with oak flooring. Works for me (primarily because I got a great deal on the oak when I was looking to replace the skanky and probably original early 50s carpet), but I was really intrigued by the possibility of using cork or real linoleum flooring in the room. I think it would have looked great - it was just a bit pricey in my situation. Both are supposed to hold up to pet traffic very well and happen to be more or less era appropriate with a room full of knotty pine.

Their current lay out block traffic flow. I would much rather go with a love seat and a few comfy chairs. How many in your family. That is how many seats you need. The rest is over kill and does anyone actually FILL a huge sectional or do three people use it? I am just not a fan. As for the TV placement, most want a visual of both the fireplace and the TV so your plan seems to be a decent option. The built in would be worth looking at...It is ironic how often the MOSTLY unused fireplaces everyone desires really messes with furniture arranging. Your new floors are to die for. This gray fad confuses me. Gray is cold,like stainless. Your kitchen and flooring are so warm and rich looking. Half your new space is painted warm the other cool... Which colors will you embrace?

If you have pets, I'd avoid berber or loop carpet. Their claws will rip up the loops, creating unfixable snags. Also, be wary of carpets that are too plush. They'll become packed down under normal foot traffic in little time and difficult to re-fluff. This happened in our spec home, under furniture, in our pathways, and with the dogs favorite laying spot in less than a year.

Suggest an alternative to a Parson’s style chair, due to its height and traditional lines mixed with your modern farmhouse chairs and a live edge table. Think about the room overall when choosing and the influence chair‘s style will have. So glad to hear you opinion Patricia... I had been leaning to go without a rug for so long but was being pushed by other to add one. I'm happy to get a pro that agrees with my opinion. However, I disagree with the TV placement. It's perfect where it is when sitting anywhere in the living room. Maybe it's hard to tell from the picture. Also on an adjustable mount in every direction. Love the inspo form the pic you posted. And a plan is already in place for shelving under TV.
