Craftsman home trim all painted white, help!

I recently moved into a 1913 craftsman style home, and much to my dismay, much of the wood trim and and accents are painted white. In some areas, many many layers of white. The worst offenders are the box-beam ceiling in the dining room, all of the baseboard and window and door trim (and the doors) in the second story.

What can I do? I feel like it looks so bad as white, and does not feel like it fits the style of my home. But it also seems like removing the wood paint in any way will be a huge undertaking.
