I could see leaving the wood trim alone since you are adding wood flooring, but then you may have issues of color matching anyway.

You list lots of reasons to paint it, and it seems that is really what you want to do. One thing I might suggest is consider the color of the white you pick - it seems like you have a lot of darker tones in your furniture, case goods and decor, and so the white you choose might be better on the warmer side, rather than the cold white that is so often used. Also consider the gloss factor - trim doesn't have to be high gloss.

I LOVE white baseboards with medium/dark wood floors. When I first read your post, without seeing your picture, my reaction would have been to say yes, paint the trim white. In seeing your room though, I actually like your trim dark, it is not a wide trim so I think that is why I dont mind the dark color. My feeling is though that you want to paint the trim white, so why not. I think the trick in windows not sticking is to make sure that the paint is 100% dry before closing the window.

Thanks for you thoughts Les, I didn't even think about the fact that it might be hard to match the wood trim to the new floors. I also agree with you on the gloss factor.

Thanks Roseabbey, I agree, which is why I'm on the fence. I wish it was bright orange and really ugly then I could take a paint brush to it without any hesitation.

I definitely vote yes. I got talked into doing my wood trim white right here on this board. It was a hard decision, but I'm really glad I did it. It totally freshened up the whole area. I have more to do in the house and I will keep going until it's all done white.

I vote yes too. To me, a uniform white trim has a crisp clean way of tying all the rooms in a house together.

I'm a lover of crisp, white trim. YOur rooms are lovely.

I vote to leave it as is. Right now it looks really good with everything else you have going on in the rooms. Before making a decision I would do the floors first then decide what I wanted to do with the trim.

Our trim was in pretty bad shape so we replaced it when we installed our hardwood floor, but kept the windows stained. Your trim looks nice and would look nice either way but it would be a big job to paint it all and I would be nervous about painting the windows.

While I like the contrast of your dark trim against your pretty paint colors I can understand your dilemma. We just remodeled our bath and office and decided to change out the stained medium oak baseboard trim to white. Here is what we did that you might want to consider:

Because the stained trim is narrow and I really like the look of a wider trim, we purchased MDF 5 1/4 inch pre-primed baseboard molding from Home Depot. It is very inexpensive and only needed 2 coats of paint. Looks so good that we are going to replace the hallway and master bedroom next. It really gives the rooms a whole different look, and if you are going to go to all the work of removing the trim, sanding, priming and painting you might want to consider an inexpensive and easy option.

As for the windows. I painted them too. I left them open for a couple of days after and they seemed to be ok. The key it to make sure they are really dry before shutting the window.

Justretired, thanks for the suggestion and advice, I would love to add thicker molding but I'm not sure if it would look right, the house is a 1960's split entry. The trim is all very plain and simple so painting it white may make it look cheap.

I am considering adding a little decorative molding to the simple molding and doors, then painting it white so it's not so plain and so I wouldn't have to replace all the molding in the upstairs of the house. Since you replaced the baseboards, did you replace the door and window trim as well?

No, I just lightly sanded, primed and painted all of the trim around the doors and windows. I was afraid that it would look disproportionate but it looks just fine. we are really happy with it.

The split entry could be a problem. So far we have only changed the trim within 2 rooms so we have not had to worry about the open plan that is our downstairs. But I would really like to replace it all-such a great new look it gives.
