vintage/antique Christmas lights
This Christmas I remembered a box of old Christmas lights that has been stored in my basement since my parents passed away. Opening it was like finding treasure! I immediately recognized the old pointed light bulbs (C-6) and the tin and aluminum reflectors that were used with them. There are also quite a few strings of pre-1960 C-7 bulbs. But the best find of all was two beautiful colored crystal stars. According to what I found on Google, they are Matchless Wonder Stars from the 1930s, also called Czech cut crystal C-6 Christmas lights. There are no lights attached to either star, so I put them over lights on my Christmas tree to photograph. Does anyone have any additional information about the stars and how they could be used/displayed?
I also wanted to use the old light bulb strings, but was afraid to plug them in for fear of starting a fire. The photo below shows what I did with some of hem.

Comments (27)OMG, that is so sweet and nice everyone! WMA8 & Martinca, yes that is exactly what DH & I have talked about me doing for a few yrs now & want to do. I really, really want to fix up cast off & cheap but quality finds and resell to people who would not otherwise be able to afford brand new. I think that we all deserve quality and heirloom pieces that aren't fads & made in China. Not everyone starting out wants their home entirely furnished in box store, cookie cutter, flat packed furniture. In fact I just got home from a pow wow w/ my boss & friend about why it was more preferable to me to reduce my hrs, follow a dream and keep a friend. Every time I wonder if I should wait 'just a little longer' you all give me such a good feeling about going for it and why it will work!! PS - still talking w/ seller. She e-mailed me to let me know that she spoke w/ Mr. Fox for awhile. She told me that w/ a deposit she would hold the bed and let me pay it off. So tempted. Really have to consider it and sit down w/ Mr. Fox. It's not that I don't have the money to pay for it - it's just that I have to make sure that Mr. Fox will refinishing the bed for me down the road. I have so much furniture that has required refinishing of chipping veneer that I don't think will ever see the light of day again. Her interest certainly seemed piqued when our truck pulled up so maybe I have found someone who can source things for me and/or keep me in mind first when she gets things from auction. PS - Our current mattress is very low profile but we desperately want a new mattress. What is the average mattress thickness now? Just thinking ahead and will take measurements. Comments (3)If you don't mind a modern cordset, you could buy a string of Asian lanterns at an import store and give away the lanterns. Most of these strings use the same size lamp base (C-7) as the old bubble lights did. They probably won't have clips for the tree branches, however, and I think most of them have white wire rather than green. It you want to reproduce the appearance of an old cordset, you might have to assemble it yourself from modern reproduction parts (plug, wire, lamp sockets). The website linked below might have what you need (I haven't checked to be sure). No doubt there are other similar vendors, this just happens to be one I know about. Good luck with the project. Comments (14)Good heavens!...Don't wash any nice furniture with vinegar water! Pledge doesn't "build up". If it has been polished with the old formula pledge, which contained silicone, the silicone bonds with the finish and makes it repel water....as well as repel any subsequent finish you might apply. And short of removing all the finish and sanding the wood ( not good for a veneered top!) there is no way to remedy it. I am guessing the table has been refinished and the top coated with polyurethane....and polished with a silicone polish. Enjoy it as it is! And in the future, a wipe with mineral spirits removes any wax build-up. But Pledge is not a wax....and won't build up....See More
6 years agoLindac92, the stars are definitely glass, and the points are very sharp! The blue and yellow one has a double row of points, while the red and green one has a single row, including one that is somewhat loose. All of the glass parts are faceted. On the backs, you can see the metal prongs that held the light bulbs.
