need some custom kitchen cabinet makers in nova/dc area
Comments (5)The deal where you order a cabinet w/o glass is called "glass ready." It's more economical to buy the glass you want locally and it's easy to install. I have to ask: who does the cooking/clean-up at your house? You have some really strong opinions on stuff like pull-outs, so I hope you're the one who has to cope with crawling around on the floor to reach the thing at the back of the cabinet as well as the person who has to find the step ladder to remove heavy appliances from over the fridge. I get your frustration, but pull-outs and drawers are engineered to carry heavy loads and perform just as intended, which might be called "ergonomically smart." Personally, I love having my dishes in a drawer just opposite the dishwasher vs where they used to be over the dishwasher pretty much over my head. When I can open the drawer by the stove and locate the right pot at the back of the drawer vs having to crouch down and unload everything in front of that pot and then re-load afterwards, it makes me a much happier and more efficient cook. God knows I spend enough time in the kitchen without increasing that time with mindless make-work. As for construction, you need to check out the terms "particle board," "furniture board" and "plywood." You really aren't going to want all-wood cabinets for structural reasons. "Furniture board" (a variation on particle board) has a sort of standard quality, which is "good to excellent." Both plywood and particle board come in various grades ranging from crap to excellent and one should not be mistaken for the other. FYI: This many kitchen cabinets, in a roughly 11-odd feet x whatever kitchen plus these china cabinets (glass ready) cost us $14,000 3 years ago. They came from Home Depot. We did the install ourselves. Note that we have a pantry with pull-out shelves on the bottom half, a lower corner unit with a super-susan (the best!!), and an "easy reach" upper corner cab. Under the peninsula is all drawers. Because we have such a small space to work with, as do you, we chose frameless cabinets which gives you just that little extra space when every inch counts. Amish cabinet makers are awesome, but they don't do frameless as far as I know....See MoreCoffee Maker, Steam, and Kitchen Cabinets
Comments (12)I've had a coffee maker ruin the finish on a cabinet before. New cabs back in the early 70s. I had no idea it'd do that. Then the day came when I wiped them down and wondered 'what in the world has happening on this cabinet door?' yep, coffee maker right below it. I'm sure it happened slowly over a number of yrs. Now I keep my little coffee pot out to the front of a small section of counter (maybe 1' wide) between tall cab and stove. I don't have kids at home anymore, so it isn't a problem there. I only make 2 cps now and then it's turned off so probably wouldn't be the problem I had before with 2 coffee drinkers and more with company. that slide out base looks good tho - I might take a look at one of those next trip to BBB....See MoreKitchen is gutted and cabinet maker just emailed plans; feedback?
Comments (17)@cpartist I just looked at the architect plans and it is 3'6" from the sink wall to the start of the island. And 3'6" from the right edge of the island and the stove wall. So it definitely isn't going to be 6' Is that from stove handle to counter edge or cabinet to cabinet? You want to measure from the things that stick out the furthest, meaning the stove handle to the counter edge. Also at least on the stove side, I would make the aisle 48" wide unless you're the only cook. If you share cooking you need 48" especially if you add that second oven. When we came to measure we set up the guys wood horse (don't know the technical term for it that's in the photo) to be the island (we rotated it the correct way) and honestly it's like 6 steps from the fridge to the sink. It's not the number of steps. It's the fact the island will act as a barrier, meaning you will have to walk around it. It's a heck of a lot different rotating a single saw horse and having a full island with the overhangs. I like the look of a clean island without a sink. Again do you work alone in the kitchen or is someone helping to clean up as you cook? One of the main reasons I put in a prep sink this time was because DH likes to help me clean up, but he constantly gets in my space as I'm trying to cook. I guess I am form over function and we aren't big chefs. I'm not either but when I do cook, I want it to be very functional since the truth is I dislike cooking. Just another thought on the island matching the lights. I personally would prefer having my cooktop/stove centered on the back wall verses having the island lights centered on the cooktop. And I speak as an artist. We just want more space so that we can fit more than 4 people in our kitchen. For the past 17 years I have put groceries away with the bags on the floor next to the fridge. I guess I was thinking if I just move my laptop to the island we would have that countertop space as a landing area if needed. Just because you did something for the past 17 years doesn't mean that now you still need to do it like you did. Each time you come in, it will mean dragging in groceries, and somehow moving the lap top as you are holding the groceries? Or putting the bags on the floor first, moving the laptop and then lifting the bags? Here's another thought. What if you made the base 15 drawer in the island turned sideways so it faces the fridge and put your laptop etc in that drawer? Have the drawer open towards the fridge so all 24" open but the drawer depth is only 15" deep? Now is the time to truly think though every single activity you do in the kitchen and how to make it the most functional and yes, most beautiful. And the truth is what is functional for you may not be for someone else. For example, even though most people say don't put the cleanup sink on the island, for us as we are aging in place, the most functional place for my prep sink was on the perimeter with the clean up sink on the island. However, make sure you're not making compromises just for the sake of compromising....See MoreCustom IKEA kitchen cabinets door makers that use Farrow & Ball paint?
Comments (4)As LWO says, the cabinet makers are using BM or SW paint colors, but it's not those guys's paint. So you will need to find a shop who could do a totally custom color and attempt to match. Or find an acceptable match in the big companies lines -- BM Shoreline is one suggestion. I think you are unlikely to get a truly custom color application in one of those volume shops, though, at least not without a decent setup fee. Of course, people do paint their cabinets with regular old latex paint so I don't see why you couldn't find someone to do it. But yeah, probably a separate job, at which point.... maybe a full redo starts to make sense? Here's a blog post with Semihandmade + F&B paint https://www.remodelista.com/posts/ikea-upgrade-a-kitchen-remodel-with-cabinet-fronts-from-semihandmade-of-la/ If you're set on Farrow and Ball they are supposed to have good customer service, why not reach out and see if they have any info. Good luck!...See Moregeoffrey_b
