My sink, faucet and butcher block are in!
Comments (12)thanks! Jenanla - I thought that Waterlox wasn't considered a good idea if chopping on the counter? Maybe, though, I could apply it around the sink/faucet alone (if it can go over previously oiled surfaces....) Kateskouros - the pendants are from Home Depot! I really, really like them - shiny, but practical as the glass cylinder can be cleaned somewhat easily. I think that their are made by Bazz (?) And since they are transparent, they don't block views and don't feel heavy. Redroze - it is rather freshly oiled, as IKEA suggests a rather heavy maintenance schedule for the first two months. Now, after seeing how happy wood can be, I feel that I ought to appologize to my other rather neglected cutting boards. What I especially love about mineral oil is that it isn't combustible. I don't care what anyway says, chopping on a surface where the rags used to apply the product cannot be put into the dryer and are spontaneously combustible, seems rather unappetizing to me. I did find that the oil raised the grain, so I knocked it down with a super fine sanding block, and it is silky again. The first night that we had it, I put a hot pizza (on carboard) on it and found that it raised the grain oddly. but I oiled it, sanded it, seems fine. I think that it will take some getting used to, chopping/cutting on the counter. I've been so used to NOT doing that, all these years :)...See MorePlease help me with color scheme to go with butcher block island
Comments (9)I had a similar color scheme in my last kitchen. All white cabinetry with seeded glass uppers. Counters and backsplash were marble slabs. Floor was a very dark coffee stain. I also had an oak butcherblock counter from Ikea that I adored. I didn't stain it because I wanted to use it as a work surface. It held up remarkably well! The cabinets below were painted a color called french pear. Sort of a yellow/green/grey I included a link that has a similar color with butcherblock. There's only one pic that shows the island well so you may have to hunt a bit. As for perimeter counters I always think soapstone or paperstone looks nice with white cabinets. They both have this matte finish to them that makes them absorb light in this lovely soft way so that the difference between the black and white is less stark. If you want something lighter you could always go with a quartz or stone that resembles marfil marble or limestone in a honed finish. (I don't recommend using either on kitchen counters as they're too soft). Good luck! Comments (17)SecondHalf, hi. I meant to answer your RI fabricator question, but now don't see the thread, so I'll post here. We used Minas Granite (though I think they are changing their name to Black Diamond Granite). I know they work with granite and marble, but don't know about soapstone. The owner, Geneci Silva, was very patient, sending us to several stone importers until we finally found the stone we liked. Then he stored it for us until we could get started. Once we were ready for countertops, he was out to template within a few days and the counters were ready within a week. We needed an l-shape with a sink and cooktop cutout + runnels on both sides of the sink. We wanted a curved end to the peninsula part of the L; he and his operations guy spent about an hour with me, laying out how the curves should look for the best appearance. Together we also laid out the counters on the stone (it took two slabs) so that what I thought was the best part of the stone would be in the most visible places. Geneci and the ops guy also listened to what I wanted for the sink cut out and the runnels. That part turned out just perfect. From GardenWeb Photos They are a small operation and don't have high tech equipment, such as lasers for measuring or computer-driven cutting. I don't know how important that is to you. We used some of the remaining granite for a buffet top and for various surfaces for the bathroom that we also were updating. Again, Geneci was very sensitive to time issues and getting the material to us so that the bathroom work was not held up. The company is listed as being in Providence, but the fabrication shop is in Assonet (Exit 11 on Rt. 24). If you'll email me, I'll send you Mr. Silva's phone number....See MoreBest countertop to go with butcher block island?
Comments (8)The Corian whites are very nice and you definitely give them a look. The e-stone quartz companies also have many great options. If you want a shinier, polished look the would probably fit your wants better. I just redid my masterbath, I wanted a 'white' quartz, I obviously had no butcher block but my house is post and beam so I have a lot of wood to work with. I used a remnant of SIlestone Blanco City. I love it....See Moretraci_from_seattle
