Advice needed on which Bona waterborne finish for kitchen remodel
Comments (9)Bona did not replace Pacific Strong with Traffic, if my memory is correct. Pacific Strong was non-yellowing while Traffic is not. I think they were both in the product line at the same time. Saying that is like saying GM replaced the Corvette with the Fiero. If anything, the replacement for Pacific Strong in the US is Novia. Between the Novia and Traffic is Bona Mega. You can add Mega booster (aziridine) to Mega and get near Traffic performance for less money. Pacific Strong was much less costly than Traffic, and maintained properly, could provide a suitable floor finish. If you're looking for better durability at a lower price, you can apply oil-modified polyurethane over your water-borne finish as long as it's cured completely. Personally I think Traffic is overpriced but if you need a durable finish that dries fast and has low odor it's one of the best water based finishes you can use....See MoreVenetian Gold granite w/white cabinets-need advice
Comments (15)Sidney, you did a fantastic job with your kitchen! We have a lot of similarities, the top of my hutch is like the top of your cabs over your range. My floors are on the red side, but do show up brown on the monitor. Right now I have braided rugs in front of the stove and sink which makes the floor look a lot better and not as busy. Here's what I have to keep on my countertops and I'll give the color of each item. Coffee pot - white Compost jar - Red Paper towel holder - Red....BUT...is there a better place to put it? We have the compost jar to the left of the sink for easy access. To the right of the sink I have a smallish cream wire basket wich holds Dawn, hand soap, lotion. I don't want to have to keep bending over getting those things out from under the sink. lol The do look good in their grouping. Graniteware Pitcher - Red. I use that thing several times a day. So that's five things that must stay. Oh, on the far right side of the counter is where I keep milkbones. I have a cabinet under the area for dog food, but I get tired of bending over a couple of times a day to pass out their treats. I keep putting them up, then I just leave the box on the counter. Lazy, I know. What is everyone else's must-haves for your countertops?...See Moreneed advice on white kitchen cabinets
Comments (6)The cracks are caused by the wood expanding and contracting with natural changes in humidity and temperature. If the doors are made of multiple parts (as Shaker doors are) and paint is applied after the doors are built, the paint doesn't expand and contract with the wood and you can get cracks where the rails/stiles meet the center panel. MDF doesn't expand and contract. If the manufacturer were to paint (or at least prime) all the door parts before building the door, you wouldn't see cracks either -- but I don't know if anybody actually does this. Probably it would make construction a lot more complicated. In our house, we get noticeably wider gaps between ends of old HW floor planks in the winter. We also have painted beadboard wainscoting that has significant paint cracking in the winter (this is because I didn't know to prime/paint the tongues before installation). But our old painted wood interior doors don't have any cracking, and the newest HW floor doesn't have gaps either, so I think it partly depends on construction and finish. We have a white kitchen and avoided the question entirely by using Ikea doors that are clad in thermofoil or something, not paint. The new factory paint finishes are so smooth and hard they look pretty similar to thermofoil to me anyway. [heresy]...See MorePainting kitchen cabinets - Which white?
Comments (5)I painted my laundry room BM Capital White. M DH insisted I had used a green tinged paint. Our house is in the trees and the green outside affected the white inside. Paint some samples of the white you want, but look at it in your room, morning, noon, night, rain or sun....See Morealley2007
