Need White Sapote Leaves for Giant Swallowtails - Any to spare?
Comments (8)I don't think you'll have much luck there. I trimmed my white sapote last week and the leaves wilt really fast. I doubt caterpillars will eat wilted salad that's been limp for days. I find it odd that a species from Ohio would thrive on a non native tropical tree from central America? I found this on a casual search of the web on my first hit: Black Swallowtail Caterpillars eat Golden Alexanders (above), Wild Carrots, Celery, Parsley and Dill....See MoreGoing to try white sapote for the first time
Comments (21)Cut open the "Gold" sapotes, possibly Suebelle. My thoughts- Flesh - Reminiscent of cherimoya, but rather sticky like honey. Flavor - I thought they had hints of sapodilla, hints of dates & hints of cherimoya. It was sweet with little to no perceptable acidity. I can see why some people like to give white sapotes a spritz of lemon before consuming it. Pretty good, though Seeds - The fruits had mishapen seeds. Some were plump & others didn't develop. Is this common with this fruit?...See MoreThe Big Tease (white sapote flowers)
Comments (15)Mine gets full crazy hot full sun, Andy, as do most of the happy ones that I see around the valley. I'm curious to hear what exposure others give theirs. Yes, I do fertilize mine fairly regularly in spring, mid summer and then autumn. Post lots of updates fellow growers. It looks like the one fruit on mine is turning brown and rotting, but hey, each year it gets closer to bearing fruit (nothing, then leaves, then flowers, then flowers and tiny fruit that drop, now flowers with a fruit that hung around most of the summer, hah). Happy gardening!...See MoreHelp identifying white sapote cultivar
Comments (15)Stanofh, I've heard that the bay area is great for sapote! I'm a bit jealous ;) We get a mild frost most winters and have summer heat of 110F, so it's a bit marginal. Anastasia, I got my Suebelle from Alex at Papaya Tree. La Verne Nursery produces white sapote, but I forget what varieties or whether they do seedlings or grafted plants. I haven't seen a great number of varieties available for sale in LA--mostly just Suebelle, Vernon, and McDill. You should have better luck in Long Beach than I'm having inland. If McDill is surviving my place, I suspect you'd have no problem with it. There *is* a chance that it requires a pollinator (that might be why mine hasn't produced any fruit even though it flowers twice a year). The question of whether or not pollination is required seems to be oddly complicated with white sapote. I'm hoping to try grafting it next spring- I could save you a plant if any of them take (I've heard it's a bit more difficult to graft than, say, apple or stonefruit). Of course you will get flowers and fruit faster with an older plant. If you find a source for chocolate sapote fruit I'll be interested to hear your opinion of it! I've heard people either think it tastes like chocolate pudding or like motor oil. ;) I hope i can try one some time, since I love soft persimmons....See MoreLars
