Where can I buy seeds at not too expensive but good all the same?
Comments (29)Micki - your excitement is so contagious! Makes me feel like a first time WSer all over again! I bet you folks WS sunflowers too. And ANNUALS, those too right? Yes, on both counts. I don't normally grow sunflowers, but lots of folks do. Annuals? For the more tender annuals, you'll want to wait until very late winter - early spring for those. Others can be sown earlier. Don't know what a SASBE is yet but think it has something to do with what seeds I'd like to have. Hehe - yup, it's got something to do with the seeds you want. SASBE = Self-addressed, Stamped, Bubble Envelope. You put postage in the envelope, and a mailing lebel with your address, then send it off to the member who is offering the free seeds. Then you haunt the mailbox till the enveolpe comes back with it's precious cargo. PV whatever your first tomato is there it looks meaty, juicy and delicous, That first tomato is "German Striped". Good tasting. how do I find members names, Duane is going to send me seeds but I have to research how I see his seed trade page. next to the name on each person's post is a link that says "My Page" - click that and it will take you to the particular member's page - trade lists, email addresses , etc. Welcome to winter sowing! Glad to see you are enjoying yourself so! PV...See More...little boxes, little boxes, and they all look just the same...
Comments (17)Historic residential architectural styles were not based on a "look" but a collection of specific cultural, experiential and architectural influences that were adapted and modified by architects and builders often but not always retaining much of the original intent. American Colonialists brought the Post Medieval style from England but substituted local materials (lap siding and wood roofing shingles instead of stucco, half timber and thatch). As the colonies prospered they adapted and modified the more fashionable English styles that were based on Classical (Greek & Roman) designs from the Italian Renaissance. We know these styles generally as Colonial and specifically as Georgian, Adam, etc. They were later used as inspirations for the Colonial Revival styles. In the case of the Craftsman Style, it was originally developed in southern California by the Greene Brothers. They were architects influenced by the English Arts & Crafts movement, oriental wooden structures and formal training in wood & metal working and designed intricately detailed handcrafted houses of natural materials that joined the interior with the exterior. These designs and much simpler variations were published in many American magazines like The Ladies Home Journal, Good Housekeeping and The Craftsman and were quickly adopted by pre-cut material supply companies that sold mail order kits. This resulted in the rapid spread of a watered-down version of the Craftsman Style bungalow across the country. This is why it is difficult to find a Craftsman Style house that retains much of the inspiration or detailing of the Greene brothers. A similar thing happened when a vernacular version was developed of the Prairie Style. When a historical architectural style is reduced to a "look", it usually only retains the name for advertising purposes. When I see the term Craftsman it tells me virtually nothing except that the house is unlikely to have classical detailing but you can never be sure without a photo or drawing....See MoreRoses all turn out the same color?
Comments (22)Hi Mad Gallica, Well I'll meet your bragging challenge. I have 3 own root Darcy Bussell roses purchased last year from a David Austin vendor in NY. They wintered over beautifully, suffered little damage excepting broken canes due to the tremendous amount of snow Massachusetts got this winter and the cold spring which kept the heavy melting snow on them until mid April. They are easily 3 feet tall and loaded with buds. I have 3 more DB purchased from Chamblees this spring which are also loaded with buds and are growing like crazy. This is David Austin own root Darcy Bussell planted last summer. And these are the 3 Chamblees own root still in pots. I also have 3 own root Ambridge rose from David Austin that were planted last summer and are growing well. These had to be cut to the ground due to cane breakage but they are also loaded with buds and thriving. I also just planted 3 Gentle Hermione own roots from David Austins. The root system was huge and the roses are growing well considering they've only been planted about 2 weeks. I would not hesitate to purchase own root roses directly from David Austin Roses. My only wish is that they had more own root varieties available. This is my Ambridge Rose own root purchased from the DA vendor in NY and planted last summer. She was cut back to the ground in early May after the snow melted due to severe cane breakage and is doing quite well. This is Lady of Shalot from last year purchased from Heirlooms if I remember correctly and wintered over in a pot in the ground. I have read that after several years that the grafted roses lose their vigor and produce less roses. This is anecdotal, so I'm not claiming whether it is true or not. I like the fact that if the rose dies back to the ground, which can occur frequently here with our cold temps and sometimes lack of snow cover the same rose will grow back. With own root I don't have to worry about having all my roses grow back as Doctor Huey as happened to IvaKassin or revert to multaflora rose. I also don't have to try to discern suckers from top growth or other issues that occur with grafted roses. I have had grafted Austins that had little vigor, I think this is more a trait of the specific rose rather than if it's grafted or not. So I'll readily agree with MustbNuts and purchase own root roses whenever possible. Sharon...See MoreFace products: all the same brand?
Comments (42)I don't care to spend more on a pricey brand IF it's going to make a difference. But on the other hand, I have no problems with a drug store brand IF it works. Such as Cetaphil and Cerevave, i love both of their cleansers and I have a Cerevave moisturizer I use in winter (it's thicker, more moisture). But for some reason, Neutrogena does nothing for me. Oh I mean it's fine but I tried the hydroboost moisturizer and eye cream (I used a whole jar/tube of each) and no improvement. Right now I need to find a good eye cream. Sue, I need to start my brush back up too. I mentioned exfoliater, well I use AHA in the mornings and an AHA moisturizer. But my forehead has been feeling dry, so I'm thinking exfoliate. The AHA is an exfoliater! Maybe the brush will get rid of flakiness. Our weather has been up and down so maybe that has something to do with it. I'm generally drier in the winter. PS I used to love the neutrogena soap!...See Moredcarch7 d c f l a s h 7 @ y a h o o . c o m
