Advice on garage door style?
Hi, we have to replace our 1990's garage door and are trying to decide what style to get. The house is a 1950's ranch and has been remodeled on the inside to reflect its midcentury modern style, but the outside has veered away from that over the years. We would love to bring it back to its roots! Also considering new paint colors for the exterior, so various schemes are being considered! It is currently light gray with dark grey trim. The front door matches the orange of the garage.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoLove this style door with MCM house. Horizontal cedar plank garage doors are also beautiful but, in my opinion, need some other cedar on the facade to tie into. Great looking house! I’m sure you’ll many paint color ideas on this site. And, yes, the orange garage door color should go.

Comments (14)An entry door needs much more than an actually visible color. It needs the approach to it to have clues that it exists, and that people are welcome to come to that door. There doesn’t seem to be much of an encouraging wide and friendly pedestrian path to the porch, where presumably, people will travel. Right now? This looks like the cars are telling people that they are not welcome. The garage is the most obviously important part of the facade. It’s the most obvious and prominent element. And the front door isn’t visible, and has no designed path of destination to it. The hardscape and landscape design needs to overcome this. Paint is secondary. But yes, paint all of the batten trim and the garage doors the house body color. That body color may need a big workout on a lot of elements, actually. Comments (20)It is hard. It’s a big investment. The main design of your home is a mix of styles so personal choice. The wood garage doors and trims are a bit trendy and not cheap so prefer paint rather than the wood. But if using wood, cedar is best with good stain protection. It does require more maintenance. And using it on Gar doors and posts are help integrate them. A little split rail decorative fence on left side of yard would help balance the look. Nice mock ups!!...See More

I agree with using large open windows to compliment the mid-century look you want to attain. Modern wood garage doors would be a great addition. This particular style is an actual sectional garage door. The wood panels are hooked up to an aluminum frame!
