Should I have my island the same color as the perimeter cabinets?
Comments (50)May I just reiterate how grateful I am for the input? cpartist, I have attached a picture of the tile on the fireplace (were you asking me about the tile or the wall color?). I had purchases the 12x12 samples from Samplize and loved the look of Revere Pewter in there on then walls, but did not like it in the kitchen. I thought Edgecomb gray looked nice in the kitchen, and I put that sample next to the tile in various locations, and thought it looked nice. So I had planned on using White Dove for the cabinets, as I thought it looked perfect in the space and worked with both the countertop and the backsplash. But then I hired a color consultant that came recommended from several friends. I was unimpressed with her. She thought that White Dove would not work because she thought it would bother me that my trim on the windows and on the pantry door did not match the cabinet color and she recommended Chantilly Lace. In my opinion, Chantilly Lace looks too white. I have a sample of White Dove, and I think it looks well with both the backsplash and the counter. I could hire another color consultant, but I was completely turned off by the earlier experience. Beth has me wanting to check out other whites, such as Simply White and Oxford White. I had found a Design Dilemma thread where the question was "Simply White or White Dove," and the majority (overwhelming majority) said they liked Simply White more than White Dove. Do you have an opinion on that? I am totally open to trying colors other than White Dove, but, again, I thought it worked until the color consultant told me she thought it would bother me. I do not want to repaint all my trim. Do you think my cabinets can be a little off white and have it look okay with the trim around the windows and the pantry door? Should I consider painting my pantry door (versus the trim)?...See MorePaint 3 sides of Kitchen Island a different color than the drawers on
Comments (8)In my daughter's kitchen, we painted the side of the island with stools black. The other 3 sides are a bone color, like the rest of her cabinets. We did this as two little boys were going to be sitting there, kicking away at it constantly. Yes, one CAN tell them to stop, but as soon as ones back is turned, they do it again. They don't even realize they are doing it! They're 17 and 19 now and no longer kick, but that black certainly served its purpose and looked just fine....See MoreHelp with white kitchen: cabinets, walls, trim in different whites?
Comments (10)@Gaby Buller Take a look at SW 7042 Shoji White, for the walls. You can definately do a beautiful white palette. Since all color has a DNA (Hue family, Value and Chroma), you can be guided by framework to create a palette that is harmonious and pleasing to your eye. When pairing whites, a good principle that works is having at minimum 0.2 difference in Chroma (last number) between your whites. A little spacing on the color wheel also helps. This principle ensures there is enough contrast between your whites so that one will look more neutral than the other, and they don't look dingy or dirty. The other way to add contrast is to change the sheen level. For example, you can play with sheen levels on BM White Dove and use it as the Trim Color, in a higher sheen than the cabinets and use BM White Dove in Matte on the walls. This will also provide the contrast your eye needs without looking dull. Other colors that may fit your vision and work with the above mentioned framework are: SW 7013 Ivory Lace SW 7010 White Duck SW 9586 White Sesame BM OC-13 Soft Chamois...See MoreDifferent fronts AND colours on island and cabinets?
Comments (19)I do like that green. I just had a look at the Ikea site because I thought I remembered other colours in a shaker style that I had seen on a design show. Here are some in Navy....a different door profile than the white you've chosen but still shaker style overall This one is a walnut look. Could be stunning - I've never seen this one in person so I don't now if it looks good or not. Another alternative are Ikea cabinets on the island but get doors from a place like Semihandmade. They have doors and cover panels that fit and coordinate with Ikea cupboards. They have lots and lots of colours available. I have no idea about pricing but many people on Houzz talk about using this company. It might solve your problem and open up a whole new world of colour choice for you. Since it is just the island, even if the cost is a little more than Ikea, it is a limited spend - rather than the whole kitchen. They have blues and pinks and greens and plenty of wood grain choices. I agree as well, keep the counter the same on the perimeter and island. Good luck. Come back and post pictures later. Choose the backsplash last. If you like colour that might be a good place to bring some in....See MoreRoanoke Woodworking Inc.
