"Lego Wall"?

During our design charrette I mentioned that I had a rather large Lego modular town collection. Doug decided to provide me with a way to display them. That wall actually doesn't go all the way up to the ceiling. I think it's supposed to be about 7 feet. That allows light into the bedroom hallway.

I thought maybe ARG was experimenting with legos as building materials . . . again.

The only thing I question is the location of the Study/Bedroom 2 door location. Locating the door at the south end of the wall may provide better options for furniture layout within the room, but you would lose the potential visual connection from the living room.

You might have a good idea about the door. We actually need to put 9 feet of bookcases against the wall in that room and moving the door to the south end might work better. Thanks.

Look great to me. I like the powder room off the garage and back door. It comes in handy when you are working outside and dirty. The screened in porch with walls on 3 sides should cut down on the wind and blowing snow. Also like that you don't have to walk thru the master bath to get to the closet. I see that in so many plans and I think it is poor design that you have to carry your clothes through the bathroom to the bedroom to get dressed. I sure wouldn't want to get dressed in a closet no mater how big it is. And you don't have to disturb anyone using the bathroom.

That's not a powder room near the garage. It's a utility room for the furnace and hot water heater. And I also do not like going through a bathroom to get to a clothes closet.

A comfortable and well designed looking home. But I agree the living room might be a little on the narrow side, especially since you have to pull the sofa closer to the center of the room to allow for traffic behind it - 2 to 3 feet would make a big difference. It shouldn't cost too much to add a few square feet to this area of the house.

i like the master bath. Just the right size.

The guest bath, I wonder if it's a bit small? Can the study/bedroom have a smaller closet, maybe an armoir, too, so that the bathroom can have a vanity with drawers on one side? That would give you or your guests some storage, so they can hide away their things when company comes for the evening.

I don't see a lot of storage for "stuff": seasonal items, luggage, toilet paper, paper towels, you know, "stuff". Not that we need a lot of "stuff", we just accumulate it. Well, I guess we do need toilet paper. But still. Channeling my inner George Carlin here.

In the living room, what is on either side of the Lego wall, is that bookshelves? Or is the TV in the middle and the wood-look on either side is the Lego town? I wonder if the Lego wall is glass on the backside, along the hall? Lego sets are just as interesting on the backside, might be nice to share the light and views. I don't imagine people tiptoeing through the hall in negligees while company peeps through from the living room. Of course, I could be wrong . . . In any case, glassing them in keeps them dust free. But if they are in the open, I find that a child's watercolor brush makes a good duster for Lego Architecture sets. In fact, Robie House has a balcony that our brush hides in quite conveniently.

I should have added more information. It's just my husband and me, and a dog. We rarely if ever have overnight guests, so the size of the second bathroom really doesn't matter.

On either side of the tv/lego wall, are smaller (around 5 ft tall) walls. This is to provide privacy for the bedroom wing and to allow more light into that hallway. The tv/lego wall doesn't go all the way up to the ceiling, so the lego sets will be visible from both sides.

And just as a FYI to everyone, please don't think the lego sets are a major design element. They are not. Doug just happened to put them into the design. We didn't even know this until we saw the drawings.

As far as storage for stuff, we already have the separate 2 car garage with living space above it so we can put stuff in there for seasonal storage space.

It looks like ARG done ya good! I love a T or L house. This is similar to my parents' winter home in AZ, and it works very well. We lived there with our toddler one (brutal) summer, and it worked for us, too.

One thing I notice ARG does, is design hallways. Quite nice.

Ha ha the Legos are not a design element! But they could be...we know a Lego Master who made some of her furniture out of Lego! But seriously, that is good display space for anything.

The 'preview' of furniture added by ARG is nice - definitely figure out how yours will fit - since as drawn, you'd have to take the longest route from your bedroom closet to get to the laundry room b/c going through the living room is blocked (tho maybe you have less furniture)

I wonder if the island and 'right' side of the kitchen will be underutilized since the main working components + the pantry are all on the outer/left side of the kitchen?

Lastly, there's a spot in the Master Bath that is the standing space for the toilet, the shower, and one of the sinks - seems a bit busy. Maybe having just 1 sink (either centered or only the 'right' sink) would help alleviate that?

Front facing kitchen....love! So hard to find plans that have this.

I noticed that too when looking at stock plans. Almost all of the kitchens are in the back. We have views out the front and out the back, so I like that I can look out the front when I am in the kitchen and I also have views from the dining area and living area to the back.

I really love this design! My only question is whether or not the main living space will get enough light. It seems like the kitchen window is the only one that opens directly to the outside. My parents' screened in patio definitely kills the natural light coming in, even though they have several big windows. You've got the porch window, but it's also covered with the roof.

I'm sure that you guys already talked about this, but that would be my only hesitation.

jemimabean, The problem we have is that the front of the house faces South which is the best light but we have to weigh that against privacy. Will have to think about this, thank you.

Love the secondary entrance near the garage, the placement of the powder room, the interesting shape and flow for a modest sized home. I like that you all put the dining room in the middle where it being dark(er) only will contribute to it's intimacy even though its open!

If I lived on 6 acres I wouldn't want to block views by boxing in my porch and patio. I would move the garage to the laundry/pantry wall.

chispa, we started out with the garage on that wall, but we didn't like the front elevation, so Doug moved it to the back. Now the elevation looks great and we gained an exterior door that we hadn't realized makes a lot of sense. Now we can go outside (to the other garage) without going through the attached garage.

Fun project that came together pretty easy. We started on one of my charrettes about 9AM on a Saturday morning and by early afternoon had a concept on paper.

The "Lego Wall" was an idea of mine to incorporate something whimsical into the house which I like to do if the opportunity presents itself.

I have Lego models all over the house, including my meeting room

and I usually have one under construction at any given time.... like now....

Anyway, they came over and took an immediate interest in them and come to find out, she likes to build the Lego buildings (I'm more into vehicles) so when I was developing our concept later I thought to incorporate it into the living room wall.
