Royal Poinciana and cold weather
Comments (14)I know the posts above were a long time ago but this is all still relevant. It is 2023 and I have 5 Royal Poincianas that were grown from seeds. I let them grow in pots for about a year and then transplanted them in the spring. There was one more frost and a couple of the small ones appeared to be completely dead but I kept watering them, just in case and they finally started to bud way after the others. I used dead leaves, oranges that fell from our trees, and mulch when I planted them and they all definitely grew like crazy over the last year. 3 of the bigger ones that did not get the frost damage are now over 7 feet tall. I am expecting them to double in size this summer. 2022-2023 was a particularly cold winter with tons of rainfall and then following with lots of cold days. I am in the horse property area in Gilbert and when it says it is going to be 36, it will likely freeze. So I spent time putting on and taking off cold protection all winter. I would guess that they spent around 20 days total protected. I used some various sized freeze cloth bags with drawstrings at the bottom (Don't buy on Amazon. Home Depot has them on their app for a lot less but you have to order them as they are not in the store). I also ran some mini incandescent christmas lights around the base and on a few, around the trees as well. I took a 4x12 painters drop cloth and wrapped the base of each. It sound tedious, but I got into a rythm and was able to deploy these quickly once I got used to the routine. The reason for the Dunn-Edwards painters drop cloth is that they shed water when it rains and they are extremely heavy so they won't blow away in the wind. This all worked very well and only the very ends of the branches got freeze burned. Thought I would share since I had research a lot and ultimately came up with the best method in my opinion. I did way too much work on these just to let them die over the winter. The plan next winter when they are larger and have thicker trunks is to just use the larger C sized incandescent bulbs wrapped around their trunks and I won't worry about the small branches. As they get larger, you don't have to worry about the cold as much unless there is a sustained freeze for 24 hours or more....See MoreWhen you get really cold weather,
Comments (41)Since I have new windows in my house, I don't turn the heat up any higher when it is very, very cold out. It is below zero at night now with the arctic air. I have an electric mattress pad on my bed and decided not to use my down comforter this winter as I prefer the heat from the mattress pad. During the day, I wear sweats and have been wearing an old thermal top under my sweatshirt. I also put a throw over my legs when I am sitting. I am going to make chili tomorrow and don't plan to leave the house on Monday which should be the coldest day. Tonight on the news they said we should warm up our cars for 15 minutes before driving....See MoreAn amusing take on Minnesota cold weather

Comments (11)My advice about riding a motorcycle at below freezing weather is don't. Too many hazards - too uncomfortable - not enjoyable. If this doesn't put you off, consider this. My experience with a 350cc Honda says the engine suffers. My little 350 was almost new and ran all summer and the engine stayed tight - no out of ordinary sounds on startup - sounded like new all summer. One day, I went out and the temperature dropped to 20 F. I nearly froze getting it home. After that ride, the engine loosened up. The pistons were not tight to the bores for the first minute or two after a cold start. It ran ok for the next 2000 miles, but I'm sure the engine would have been tighter if I had not ridden it at such cold temperatures. My guess is that the cylinders were over cooled, and the cylinders did not expand much causing the pistons wear in a bit more. This may not be an issue for liquid cooled engines with a thermostat, but with plain air-cooled engines, it may be a factor....See Moredchall_san_antonio
