Comments (2)Looks like it could be one of several things. 1. inadequate watering 2. sucking insect (aphid) damage most citrus viruses are not transmitted from a parent to a seedling....See MoreKey Lime seedling not growing
Comments (3)are you sure.. it isnt growing roots???? i am not sure.. i would have a babe like that in any sun ... let alone tropical sun .... very bright shade should be good enough ... many peeps grow trees in rather small pots.. and pot them up.. as the roots fill the smaller pot ...i cant tell from the pic... how big this pot is ... it looks huge .... finally ... you have rather high expectations for a one month old plant... exactly how big do you think it should already be ??? ... i would just be happy it sprouted.. and has lived this long.. let alone worry it isnt growing fast enough ... if you had lower expectations... you would be extremely delighted by your success so far ... ken...See MoreI made key lime pie with real key limes!!!
Comments (24)Brian!!! How you buddy!! HUGS buddy!!!! Listen, I have been wondering how things are going? I saw what your yard will look like and now a greenhouse to boot! If there was a way to put that bar into your greenhouse, just think of the possibilities...lol Have you been able to get all your plants out of the yard? The perennials and shrubs and stuff? Then all your citrus and others.? By the way, don't forget to take Sugar with you...lol How far from your original home is this? Is the weather the same there? You must be getting very excited to get your new place all done and to set up that greenhouse..Always just on time...You will have it set up before the cold weather moves in, much earlier than you last attempt..lol You do have the plastic cover already or will the one you already have be big enough? Please, if you could, could you start a new Thread about your whole set up, the progress, pics of the trees, yard and the building process if you get time? I am thinking many here would love to be by your side when you do like me... Brian, big hugs buddy.I can only imagine the challenges that lie ahead and yet I know you will come through perfectly..You always do...Great job...See MorePoly embryonic key lime seedlings?
Comments (25)joshinya '...coming true to seed means they polinate themselves and produce a clone, but that does not mean they cannot be polinated by another citrus flower....' Actually, coming true-to-type in citrus means that they are nearly to 100% nucellar (polyembryonic with the bulk of the embryos being nucellar or clonal). These nucellar embryos are not the result of pollinating themselves. Yes, a key lime can be pollinated by another flower (by a bee), but that doesn't mean the pollination is successful or results in a zygote. In most citrus varieties, a successfully pollinated zygotic embryo is crowded out by the clonal embryos and it dies within the seed. So that out of maybe 300 embryos, you may get one hybrid, if it lives. While most citrus are polyembryonic, a few citrus are highly zygotic and receptive to pollen from other citrus -- 'Temple' orange, Persian lime, for example. Key limes are true-to-type from seed. Otherwise you'd probably see many man-made hybrids of them (keyquats, key-elos, key-oranges, etc. etc). This is all according to my notes that I kept from Dr. Malcolm Manners, Florida citrus expert. Laura, have you tried rooting some key lime cuttings? It would probably result in fruit sooner than a seedling, which according to my notes can take 3 - 6 years from seed, depending on culture....See Moresunshine (zone 6a, Ontario,Canada)
