What vegetables do you grow and what style garden do you have?
Comments (15)I'm still in the process of digging my veggie garden, but next year I should be done part of it so that I can get started growing something. My garden is a very large raised bed, which I am dividing with paths into small, 3 1/2 ft wide beds that I won't need to stand on ever. With our heavy clay soil, anything to cut down on compaction will be good for the plants. In the center of my garden I plan to have a small circular bed with some roses growing in it. I plan to plant in blocks and rows; I like vegetable gardens to be ornamental as well as practical. This style of gardening is called a potager, and is supposed to be popular in europe. As for what I intend to grow: potatoes, different varieties lettuce, spinach, corn, zucchini, yellow summer squash, carrots, peas, beans, beets, broccoli and cauliflower from seed. I will use transplants for: tomatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, peppers, eggplant and pumpkin. I would also like to try cantaloupe and watermelon transplants, though I know they'll be iffy depending on the year. Lots of freezing, lots of canning, lots of fresh eating! Before I plant all of those, we do intend to insulate and went a corner in our basement for a root cellar as well. I'll have to wait and see what plants end up being too finicky (maybe cauliflower!) and get knocked off the list....See MoreWhat would you call this style furniture?
Comments (48)I now recant my statement about machine carving. Asymmetry is a good indication that it was hand carved. Perfect symmetry means machine made. Also, the roughness around the leaves indicate hand work. The wood used for the front of the case may be different from the wood used on the side. Or not. A picture of the screw would be good to determine if the core or thread is tapered or the core is tapered and the thread is not. Are both screws an exact match? Is the screwdriver slot in the middle on each of the heads? All these things would be readly apparent if one were to see the object in person, but are difficult to discern from parceled out photographs. So far, I believe Casey's appraisal is holding up. Still a very nice piece of furniture....See MoreMy dream style - what do I call it? (See photo)
Comments (24)bodica and nan53 - I got really excited when you both mentioned Scandinavian. That's what I had in mind, too. I think it's the stenciled pattern around the window that does it. Anyway, I love what could be called Old World, Bavarian, Black Forest, Scandinavian folk art, etc... I want a really elaborate cuckoo clock for Christmas next year! I also like the descriptions of Colonial and Early American. I figure these are styles that won't be dated in 10 years. I'm in the middle of painting our old, dark paneling to a nice crisp white, and the above kitchen photo best illustrates the new look I want for the whole house. These are photos of my living room with one wall painted and another not. I know the baskets and African animals aren't exactly Old World or Early American - I'll deal with that later. I'll do the rest of the painting when I can. I'll be stenciling a vine and berry design around the top of the wall and a smaller, complimentary pattern around the windows and fireplace. I detest the textured spackle ceilings and want to replace them, but can't decide how. I'd like stained beadboard on the ceiling if it's not too busy with the grooved paneling (more about that idea elsewhere on Gardenweb...). I'll probably be replacing the curtains with solid white battenburg lace ones, and the rust-colored carpet with hardwood. You may notice that one window is plain and the other has what looks like a multi-paned window grille. It's masking tape. I put it there to decide whether I wanted the window grilles. I do. Oh, yeah, and I need to win the lottery too! :)...See MoreDo you know what this antique chair style is called?
Comments (18)Ha! I don't dare call my mother to tell her that I have found yet another one, and I NEED TO STOP! I truly have NO place for them, but the challenge and learning experience with each one is just what I love. And, just maybe, I'll learn something that can bring me a few dollars when I retire, although so far, I'd hate to give up any of my 'babies'. When I start tripping over them, it'll be easier to let go. :-) On the Antique form, I got 'Jacobean Revival', and I did find an image that is very close. Now that Mary Ruth has weighed in, I see another Antique Flemish chair (link below) that is also very much like it. This one that, gulp, yes, I am buying for $45, is oak. Bargain? What do you all think? The CL seller bought it to re-do, but has never gotten around to it. She is even including the fabric that she bought to re-do, which I have not seen, but she describes as 'nice, a rich looking tapestry fabric.' A friend who is in Northern Maine until Thursday AM is picking up this chair for me in our state capitol Thursday AM and bringing it to me, as he goes right through Augusta on his trip back south. HAPPY DANCE! Here is a link that might be useful: Antique Flemish Chair...See MoreAnnette Holbrook(z7a)
