I am moving into a newly-remodeled unfurnished MCM home and am in need of a bedroom set. I've become enamoured with these cantilevered nightstands, which are built from laquered solid walnut. Made by Kimball (yes, same company that made the pianos, including the one I learned to play on). Nice full-extension drawers, which like the outer surfaces are laquered. Would these look good in a circa-1950 modernest house? DH seems entirely unfazed by this issue, and I have felt vaguely nuts -- like I'm the only kook who's bothered by our lack of aesthetic unity. It's such a relief to talk about it with someone, and to get such good suggestions. So. To answer some questions: yes, we need storage. A place to close away our stuff, out of sight, is always good. The look I'd like for the room: clean. I'd like to surround the bed, which I see as on the traditional side, with more streamlined/modern accessories and other furnishings. For inspiration, I have a bedside lamp I really like, from the Thomas O'Brien line for Target, which isn't on their website anymore. If this is a commercial product, it's almost certain it does not have "polyurethane" on it. Poly is a DIY product. Most likely it's a lacquer and probably a lacquer with a bit of color in it. Lacquer is mot common because it's fast to apply, fast drying, and easy to repair. You can buy aerosol lacquer in most home centers, Deft is a common brand. You may be able to restore the color by adding a bit of pigment. Since that will be hard for you to find, you could start with some artist's pencils in various shades. LIGHTLY scribble in some color, then smudge around with your finger. Err on the light side as the lacquer will darken. Spray on the lacquer lightly to lock it down. Repeat after it dries to sneak up on the color. If you have a more obscure area to run some trials on (e.g., bottom edge of drawer), that would be helpful.
