Kitchen Appliances - Thermador or Wolf/SubZero??
Comments (1)Well, I have Wolf rangetop and ovens (couldn't do the low ovens of a range though I loved the look and counter space) but did Thermador columns. I didn't have room for more than 48" and had to push that a bit, but I also didn't like the location of the SZ ice maker. SZ also didn't have anything that looked like the Thermador then and I loved the look and raised ergonomics of the Thermador. I don't think you have a bad choice, although some folks have a strong dislike for Thermador burners and the cycling on and off on the super low simmer....See Morebluestar or wolf range/ sub zero fridge or bluestar fridge
Comments (8)We're not pros by any means but we purchased a 30" Bluestar Platinum when we moved last year. Originally we were looking at Wolf until learning about the flaking blue enamel on this site. Wekick's posts on this topic over the years have been very helpful. Before moving we had the 36" Sub Zero all freezer and 36" all refrigerator and appreciated how well they worked and Customer Service was fantastic. It's very disappointing that the SZ side of the business is so responsive while the Wolf side is dismal. In our new place we went with the SUB Zero BI 42" model. It was a real adjustment to the smaller size but this has worked well for us. As for the BlueStar - DH loves the big burner for his wok, and the oven has been perfect for his bread, tarts, pies, cookies etc. We also have a 30" Thermador wall oven which I tend to use because the height is better for me. The HVAC fellow who installed the MUA is married to a chef and they both cook. They were using a Garland from a local restaurant that went out of business and he was impressed with the simplicity of the BlueStar. I've posted these before - Ina Gartin's Tatin and bread....See Moreany advice on sub Zero vs Thermador fridge/freezer columns?
Comments (1)The SZs are the best, with a price tag to match. A lot of people buy Thermador in an entire appliance package because of the attractive price discounts. I have SZs and my next door neighbor just replaced hers at 30 years - the compressor went out and she wanted the fresh filter and other cosmetic features. I will say 1 thing, SZ has really reasonably priced replacement parts, but Thermador charges a ridiculous amount for them. If your Thermador has a major outage, then it’s likely more cost effective to replace. With a SZ, you fix them....See MoreNew Construction - Wolf/SubZero or Thermador/BlueStar?
Comments (4)My rangetop preference would be bluestar->thermador->wolf. I would never buy a 48" range. I just got rid of a 48" wolf that came with the house. The second oven is quite tiny. I would see if you could do a double wall oven instead. Unless you know you'll use the griddle constantly, I'd consider a 36" instead and throw a griddle on it when you need one. The ventilation requirements for 48" are huge - the hood really should be 54" wide, which means a blower of 1200-1400 cfm, and associated make-up air. The bluestar burners are by far the best. I think Miele makes the best ovens. Thermador ovens really are Bosch with nicer aesthetics and a few thousand more dollars. The functional differences are quite minor. Wolf ovens still have complaints about enamel cracking. I don't think they do anything special or better than brands that cost much less. I would suggest 24+30 columns instead of 18+36. 36" all fridge is huge. An 18" freezer is very narrow and rather inconvenient. Consider Fisher Paykel as a sub-zero alternative. Thousands less, and lead time is measured in weeks instead of years (yes, sub-zero is still often 18 months). I hated the bosch/thermador/meile/gaggenau column freezer - the icemaker is enormous and takes up a ton of the interior space....See MoreDYH
