Thermador or Sub-Zero Fridge/Freezer?
Comments (22)I had a pair of Thermador Columns installed in December (30" Fridge, 30" Freezer). I love them. I had a hard time deciding between the above set vs. 27" pair from SubZero. So far, everything has worked perfectly and I'm very happy with my decision. My final deciding points were: For about 20% less money I could get 25% more storage. (The 27" SubZeros were about 25% more money compared to the 30"), and I had room for either. I LOVED the way the doors on the Thermadors swung fully to the outside of the fridge, rather than staying within the front of the fridge. Opening is so much wider feeling. As for now living with it, here are some thoughts on concerns others have brought up: I'm 5/2" and have no complaints about the top shelves. They are high, but I prefer that to stooping over for lower stuff. And the drawers are great! And I like the shallow shelves, with deeper door stuff because no more lost stuff in the back of the fridge. The doors hold ALL the condiment type stuff and the rest is wide open for large jugs of milk, juice, and everything else! One of the comments I get most when people look inside is: WOW, you can see EVERYTHING at a glance! It all seems to be at eye level and just item or two deep. No more hidden leftovers & stuff. The shelves are still deep enough to hold two gallons of milk, one in front of the other, as well as my big huge serving platter, cookie sheets, and pizza boxes. So no need for the shelves to be any deeper for me. I love the ice bucket location. Open the door and it's right at waist/chest level. Perfect. Comments (3)In addition to those mentioned, electrolux icon pro handle goes almost perfectly. One of the main reasons I purchased my icon pro is exactly because it looks so perfect with a bs. Beware tho, there have been complaints that these units can not hold their temps. I have not seen very many (if any at all) recently so the problem may have been fixed. Mine is fairly old, I think it was manufactured in '07 (08 at latest) and I have not had that problem, but I have had smaller issues to deal with....See MoreRange Selection: Bluestar, Wolf or ?

I know someone who bought a top of the line Frigidaire as a status symbol. I used to work with someone that bragged about his SZ frig, but it was lost on his coworkers because they had no idea what it was. BS is much more available now than 8 years ago. We have a dealership in our town now. It would be hard from individual stories of people we know that haven't heard of it to say how well known the brand is and how this has changed. Look on BS's front page to see all the magazine that have had BS in them. " But the most experienced chef can't sear on a Wolf gas burner as well as an average cook can on Bluestar. No amount of preheating on cast iron makes up the difference in power. " How many BTUs does it take to sear a steak well. Will 20K work? 19K? 16K? 12K? The answer is all will work because it is about the amount of heat the pan can hold rather than the rate at which the pan will heat. If you google and read, some have used even 12K to produce a surface of 600F+ which I am thinking is hot enough. If you read what J. Kenji López-Alt has to say, once the CI pan is heated, you can sear a steak without additional heat added. In his article about searing a steak, he talks about all the variables except the source of heat. This is why cooking forums talk about pans more than burners. from chowhound " I put two cast iron pans--one 10" Wagner and one comal--on my standard consumer gas stove. Sorry, I don't know the BTU output. I put the gas on full blast, waited a while, then starting taking measurements. The pans smoked pretty heavily from 450F to 500F as the coat of fresh peanut oil burned off. The smoking subsided and the temperature continued to rise. After the pans crossed 600F they started smoking again and the hottest spots changed color from black to greyish silver. I figured the seasoning was starting to break down, so I shut the gas off. I have no doubt the temperature would have continued to climb had I kept the burners on. The highest temperature I recorded was 626F on the Wagner, 612F on the comal." Comments (21)I don't think the Appliance Forum is more "contentious" just more male. Kitchens is more female. Neither is better or worse just different. I have not had any user interface problems when testing the Bluestar/Culinarian and swithing back to my Kenmore that I am currently using before my remodel. No burned food on the Bluestar/Capital. I think an obsession with the best is a problem if you are paying a huge premium for that extra bit of performance. Wolf/Bluestar/Capital ranges are all in the same ball park in terms of price. And I find Bluestar/Capital more user friendly because it puts the heat in the center of the pan as oppose to the edges. Intuitively the residential cook with no cooking experience would guess it is hotter in the center of the pan than the edges. It is hard to get used to worse like professional chefs using standard appliances. I find it is easy getting used to better like a home cook using commerical grade equipment. From personal experience living here in West Los Angeles where there are lots of foodies and high end ranges and watching shows like House Hounters on HGTV I don't see people paying premiums for homes with Wolf/Sub-Zero appliances. The last two times I remember seeing a Wolf range on that show the couples did not pick the house with Wolf. People pick homes and pay premiums on location,school district,layouts,size of yards,number of rooms/bathrooms. Appliance choice is really off the radar. Like I said all else being equal I think people would pick the recognizable "better" brand. The only time I have seen appliance choice being an issue is the super high end house with low end appliance. I would imagine Wolf/Sub-Zero would be a real significant draw If a potential homebuyer saw these in a lower middle class neighborhood. Service. All these companies sub-contract to independent shops. All-Gas ranges are rather easy to service.If there is not a service provider already in your area Bluestar/Capital will just call and establish a relationship with one of the service providers in your area. If you live in Moscow Idaho and want your Gaggenau steam oven serviced that might be a problem.
