Watch Me Eat My Words
Comments (13)Thanks folks, As an apmt dweller, I have no outdoors to give my plants so I can't do that. I have it hanging in the kitchen ('cause it's too big to go anywhere else) which come summer won't be too cool (I'm on the top floor, w/ no AC & all west windows, it gets HOT). It's well away from the windows, so it'll be somewhat shady. I can't decide whether I should swap out the EA mix for my own; it would be an enormous job (I like that paper funnel technique Denise, smart)! Am thinking of just take cuttings, or unpot a few stems from the middle & pot them up separately as insurance just in case. Am I understanding it likes be on the moister side or not? Even the watering will be difficult, it's so big I think I'll have to soak it in the sink for a while, since I've removed the saucer & don't wish for water all over the floor. Am hoping when I get my E's VF-11, that watering w/ that will help & therefore ease my anxiety abt the EA mix. Have run into multiple problems getting the E's VF-11, Ace Hardware says it's restricted & not permitted to ship into NY state, that wasted 2 wks. Have just re-ordered it from Charley's Greenhouse (they advised AFTER I ordered a gallon that it's backordered, but I've convinced them to send me comparable amounts of quarts for the same price). Am hoping MAYBE I'll actually get it this wknd ... sigh....See MoreDoes anyone watch Good Eats?
Comments (23)AB does have a culinary degree. From Wiki: "Brown received a degree in drama from the University of Georgia. He first worked in cinematography and film production, and was the director of photography on the music video for R.E.M.'s "The One I Love." He also worked as a steadicam operator on the Spike Lee film School Daze. At some point, he noticed that he was very dissatisfied with the quality of cooking shows then airing on American television, so he set out to produce his own show. Not possessing the requisite knowledge, he enrolled in the New England Culinary Institute, from which he graduated in 1997.[1] Brown states that he had been a poor science student in high school and college, so he began to study the subject as he took cooking training and felt the need to understand the underlying processes of cooking." /t...See MoreWhy does my cat have dandruff?
Comments (5)How interesting! As a matter of fact she IS overweight. She is on phenobarbitol 2 x a day, which stimulates her appetite. Since she was put on it she gained about 3 pounds, mostly right away. I now ration her food carefully and she is gradually losing the weight. She gets half moist canned food and half dry. When she was still a slim, fit kitty she did not have dandruff. She is definitely not as flexible as she used to be. I brush her but not as much as I should. She bites if I try to brush certain parts, which happen to be the dandruff-affected zones. Now I recall that my dadÂs very fat cat also had dandruff. Before posting here I had been thinking about giving her some cod liver oil or fish oil, like piercing a capsule and drizzling it on her food. I just donÂt know how much. (I was thinking that might be good for her hairballs too, and better than the mineral oil containing preparation I give her now for that. ) Thanks for the link, too. It looks like this problem is quite common....See MoreWhy? Questions about my cat
Comments (17)On the issue of declawing cats... I can't remember the lady's name, but she wrote The New Natural Cat book. Her belief about declawing is that a declawed cat knows that it is unable to defend itself properly and so it becomes insecure. Those insecurities come out in a variety of behaviors, including inappropriate elimination. I personally have seen that scenario more than once with declawed cats and young children. Little people can be very stressful to cats, and a declawed cat has extra reason to feel threatened in that situation. I've known a few people who had declawed cats who did fine until a baby started crawling around the house- then there was suddenly cat pee in all the wrong places. I worried about how our clawed cats would react when DD started moving about under her own power. Everything went just fine and it was easy to see by the way the cats behaved around her that they felt (and still feel) very confident in their own abilities to deal with her. To this day, I'm surprised that neither one has come to the point of sticking a claw in her, she's certainly deserved it more than once. FWIW, my tortie is not sassy so much as dependent and demanding. We also have her litter mate, who is a typical laid back orange tabby. Since he doesn't have the same personality issues that she does, and we know they stayed with their mom an adequate time, I couldn't chalk her behavior up to weaning issues- but then again, who knows?...See Moreannztoo
