Changing painted wood baseboards and trim that have been distressed...

User

We bought a home about 10 years ago, the trim coming up the stairs to the master suite has been distressed (see pictures) and painted an olive color, and antiqued with a brown stain and all the trim around the. We're getting ready to remodel, and I simply cannot bear to tear out real wood, and simply won't replace it with pressed paper.

The door at the bottom of the steps is the original door to the house (built in 1937), also painted but not distressed. I am planning to use a heat gun to see what type of wood is underneath the paint and decide what to do with it from there.

I would like to go to a much lighter color, but I think it will have to be antiqued or it will look beat up and dirty. I don't have an issue replacing the closet doors as they are lauan plywood (hollow) with trim added but the bathroom door is solid cedar and I hate to throw that out.

Our home is moving towards a traditional Williamsburg style

Any ideas suggestions would be appreciated.
